Course Information for GBS221

Textbook and Supplies: Contemporary Business Statistics with Microsoft Excel®, By: Anderson, Sweeney and Williams is required. Microsoft® Excel 2000 Step by Step is optional.

Grades and Testing: Your grade is based on three tests to be given throughout the semester and your homework. Unless I say otherwise in class, all tests are closed book. Bring a Scantron (which may be picked up at the bookstore) and a #2 pencil with a good eraser to each test. You will be tested on material covered in class and in the textbook. Except for scantron answers, to receive full credit on test questions, show all your work using proper notation. The questions not answered on a scantron are to be completed on Excel.  Each test is worth 100 points. The homework is worth a total of 150 points.

Two tentative final grades are determined based on these two scales:

Grade SCALE A SCALE B
88%- 100% 80th to 100th percentile
75%- 87%  60th to 79th percentile
65%- 74%  25th to 59th percentile
55%- 64%  10th to 24th percentile
F below 55%  below 10th percentile

The higher of the two tentative grades is your final grade. Penalties may be assessed for turning in homework late or taking tests late.

Material to be Covered: See the handout on sections to be covered. Some material may be presented that is not covered in the textbook.

Homework: Review the ***homework page.*** You are required to turn in homework exercises on the day of each test. Homework must be placed in a folder prior to its being turned in. Unless I state otherwise in class, all homework must be done using MsOffice97 software.

Student Preparation Responsibility: You are responsible for reading each respective chapter prior to the time we begin covering that chapter in class. In addition, you should be prepared to work each exercise on the chalkboard, it requested. Reading the text is important for a good understanding of the material covered in class.

INFORM: Scores are posted and are available for you on the INFORM system. You should periodically check your scores on the terminal. If you think a score is incorrect, send me a message using the terminal.

Here is an example of a Joint Probability Table which was created in Excel and then converted to an HTML document. You are also going to want check out the Spreadsheets Newsgroup. As part of an assignment, you may have to post a question to this newsgroup and turn in the correct response to your question (or, in the alternative, you may correctly answer someone else's question.) Your web browser must be correctly configured in order for you to link to the Newsgroup and exchange articles and messages.

Be sure to read the ***General Instructions for Excel Workbook Assignments.***
