Introduction
To fulfill the fundamental purpose of improving student learning,
assessment in ENG 071 / ESL 077 Fundamentals of Writing is conducted on a
department-wide basis, utilizing both direct measures of student learning, and
indirect measures of student learning. District wide

competencies for ENG 071 and
ESL 077 have been adopted.
Direct Measures of Student Learning
English faculty attend an annual
Assessment Day held at the beginning of each fall semester to evaluate and
refine the direct measurement assessment tools for ENG 071/ESL 077.
