Introduction
To fulfill the fundamental purpose of improving student learning, assessment in ENG101 First Year Composition is conducted on a department-wide basis, utilizing both direct measures of student learning and indirect measures of student learning. District wide course competencies for ENG 101 and ENG 107 have been adopted.

Direct Measures of Student Learning
English faculty attend an annual Assessment Day held at the beginning of each fall semester to evaluate and refine the direct measurement assessment tools for ENG101. Direct Measurement Assessment Options include:

independent options

A table that students can use to keep track of their improvement (or to identify where they need to improve!). This is specifically for my assignments, so you should modify it for yours. I have created my document in Excel, although it could easily be a table in Word. I suggest to students that they print the document out or add a copy electronically to their documents folder and update it after each graded assignment. When they come talk to me about how to improve their grade, I ask to see the form, and we work out a plan to address the weakest areas I have also created a document that tells students what kinds of strategies they can use to improve in each sub-area.
