Course Assessment Calendar
utilizing indirect measures of student learning

The following calendar outlines an assessment process utilizing indirect measures of student learning for the school year 2001-2002, and a process that will continue the focus on student learning for the next several years.

August 13 - October 12

  1. This packet is distributed to English department instructors during the week of accountability, and they are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the assessment options.
  2. Instructors of a given course meet to review course competencies and to discuss student expectations and outcomes for the course. They may decide to conduct a preliminary survey of student expectations during the opening week of the course.
  3. Your choice of assessment option will be reported to Betty Hufford. (See the responsibility list on page 13.)

 October 12-November 30

  1. If using the Basic Option, instructors will evolve a set of survey questions based on course competencies. Instructors may select and/or revise questions from the attached list of samples or originate their own questions. (Sample questions may be copied and pasted from the questions document in the Shared/English folder, or instructors may simply mark their choices on this sheet and return it to Trish Hofer who will then do the drafting of the survey form.)
  2. Instructors may also decide to move ahead by implementing one or more techniques from the Basic Option Plus. Rather than just surveying students at the end of the semester, these options are assessment activities that occur throughout the semester.
  3. If using an option other than what is included in this packet, instructors will involve Trish Hofer in the drafting process.

December 3 - January 14

  1. Instructors conduct the Basic Option for assessment at the end of the fall semester.
  2. Instructors meet to evaluate and interpret the data collected and to revise the assessment instrument in preparation for the spring semester. Accountability week would be an ideal time for such a meeting.
  3. A model syllabus (or template) will be made available for instructors.  It will incorporate a brief description of course competencies and an explanation of assessment techniques that will be used in the course.

January - May

  1. Instructors will meet to discuss viable assessment techniques from the Basic Option Plus section in this packet.
  2. Instructors will evaluate the data collected during the spring semester and then determine how courses might be revised and/or reorganized for fall of 2002 to better facilitate student learning. (It's important to realize that the collected data is used by instructors for course improvement and by no one else.)
  3. Instructors will report their progress and plans to Betty Hufford on a brief form.
