MCCCD Course Information

Course assessment is conducted for the fundamental purpose of improving student learning.  Instructors in each course conduct indirect and/or direct measures of student learning.

Indirect Measurements of Student Learning
Instructors conduct indirect measures of student learning on a course-by-course basis, utilizing a department-wide calendar for assessment.  These tools are provided for the indirect measurement of student learning:

Direct Measurements of Student Learning
The English department has a well established tradition dating back to 1989 for the direct measurement of student learning in required First Year Composition courses.  The faculty have established evaluation criteria, direct measurement tools, and an ongoing process of understanding and improving student learning in ENG101/ENG107 First Year Composition.

A cornerstone of  the First Year Composition assessment plan is the Assessment Day held during the week of accountability at the beginning of every semester. The faculty meet as a group for a full day of activities that encourage the articulation of standards and criteria in composition courses.  This process is expanding and will include the following courses:

For each course, direct measurement tools have been developed and refined through gathering, analyzing and interpreting data and evidence from student writing samples.  Archives of Common Assignment / Common Final Exams for ENG101 have been developed and made available online.
