Read the following questions
carefully and then circle the one question you choose to answer.
(Do not waste writing time making the choice.) Answer the question in a
multiple paragraph essay. Make sure that you organize the essay in the
pattern of development indicated by the question. Include specific, detailed
examples to support your thesis.

Children, teenagers, adults,
and senior citizens all volunteer their time serving many different kinds
of organizations, presumably for different reasons, getting different kinds
of personal rewards. What causes people to volunteer?

Many organizations, such as
the military, hospitals, schools, churches, and political campaigns, use
both paid workers and volunteers to accomplish a variety of goals. What
are the differences between paid workers and volunteers?

People contribute time and money
to organizations whose main purpose is to promote health, religion, education,
the arts, or social welfare. Choose one of these purposes and classify
the kinds of volunteer activities that go on to promote it.

Tocqueville notes that private
citizens, by combining together [to form voluntary associations], may constitute
bodies of great wealth, influence, and strength. . . ." Illustrate
this idea by using examples and details.

The exam period is one hour
and fifty minutes. Use the full amount of time allotted to plan, draft,
and edit your essay. Write in ink on one side only of lined notebook paper.
Title your essay and write
the number of the question you were assigned in the top left-hand corner
of the first page.
Put your nane on the back
of the last page only.
Proofread your essay carefully
before handing it in.
