The GCC Creative Writing Program, offered through the GCC English Department, aids creative writers by providing:

  • A curriculum of challenging courses specifically designed to help each writer grow and maximize their writing potential;

  • Opportunities to learn about the publishing world and how to produce publishable work;

  • Feedback and evaluation from widely published and veteran instructors in the fields of creative nonfiction, fiction poetry and journaling;

  • A course of study leading to an academic certificate in creative writing that attests to the person’s writing abilities and skills;

  • Networking opportunities with fellow writers for support, guidance and community;

  • Practical experience working on the editorial board of an award-winning literary magazine;

  • Opportunities to compete in nationally recognized literary contests;

  • Preparation for an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in English with a creative-writing emphasis;

  • Guidance in the preparation of a strong writing portfolio for a Masters’ in Fine Arts program;

  • Opportunities for both nontraditional students with careers and traditional students with other degree goals to experience these diverse course offerings for their own personal development.

The Creative Writing Program originated within the Maricopa Community College District at Phoenix College and is a shared educational opportunity available through all sister District colleges. Creative-writing courses taken at any District college are transferable; only six of the required 24 credits to be applied toward the Academic Certificate in Creative Writing must be earned from Glendale Community College, offering writers tremendous flexibility in course scheduling and convenience.
