Department Webs foster a sense of community

Our GangYour Department Web can help to bring together the many groups of people it serves in a common identity. A great sense of pride and community ownership is evident when people see their work and ideas published in a public forum such as the Web.

Faculty and staff may collaborate in the creation of a web that expresses their collective identity and contains their ideas, writing, and other work.   Because a Web site demands ongoing maintenance, it also invites revision and changes. These improvements may be a collaborative, "never-ending" project which keeps people in touch and fosters a community that works together under one identity.  Students may also become a part of this community, as their expertise and willingness to participate can be invaluable.

Communication tools can be integrated into a website to promote community, also.  Email links are generally included on every web page, but links might also be included to discussion groups established for specific purposes.  The Web Dev discussion group is linked on every page of this web site.  Web pages displaying pictures and information about faculty help students and others identify and get to know the faculty.  Some examples are:
