Department Webs
foster a sense of community
Your
Department Web can help to bring together the many groups of people it
serves in a common identity. A great sense of pride and community
ownership is evident when people see their work and ideas published in a
public forum such as the Web.
Faculty and staff may
collaborate in the creation of a web that expresses their collective
identity and contains their ideas, writing, and other work.
Because a Web site demands
ongoing
maintenance, it also invites revision and changes. These improvements
may be a collaborative, "never-ending" project which keeps people in touch
and fosters a community that works together under one identity.
Students may also become a part of this community, as their expertise and
willingness to participate can be invaluable.
Communication tools can
be integrated into a website to promote community, also. Email links
are generally included on every web page, but links might also be included
to discussion groups established for specific purposes. The
