BB Tips: Customize your Course Navigation Buttons

Students can become confused by all the buttons and links in Blackboard, especially if the instructor doesn't use some of these buttons or links throughout the semester.  You can quickly and easily improve your course site's usability by changing the navigation button labels and removing buttons your site doesn't use.

Example 1: Change "Course Information" to "ENGL 101 Syllabus"

  1. Enter Control Panel and click Manage Course Menu

   2.   Click Modify for the button you wish to change (far right of Course Information)

   3.   Enter "ENGL 101 Syllabus" (Note that there is an 18 character limit for button labels) [Set Area Properties Image]
  1. Click Submit and return to top level of course site. The button should now be changed.

Example 2: Remove "Staff Information"

  1. Follow step 1. above
  2. Click Remove (far right of Course Information). Note warning prompt that appears. Deleted content cannot be recovered!
  3. Click OK to remove button.

Getting Started with Blackboard

Blackboard is not just for online or hybrid classes.  It's a tool that can be used in traditional classes, as well as those taught traditionally in the computer classrooms.  Let's get started in Blackboard!

  1.  To create your Blackboard account, email Bb@gcmail.maricopa.edu and request a Blackboard account and a Blackboard shell course for you to practice.
  2. Once you can access Blackboard, email Karen Schwalm or Marla DeSoto for access to the English Sandbox in Blackboard, a practice area for instructors.
