"The Endorsement of the Scholarships"
(“The Death of Sennacherib”)
The department
came out like the wolf on the fold,
And their t shirts were gleaming in purple and gold;
And the sheen of the fabric as it swelled 'cross their hearts
Was like essays bright polished, in all of their parts.
Like the needles
of cactus when springtime is green
That group was the sharpest the school'd ever seen:
Not like mere pencils, grading points to be blunted,
Was this bright band who for excellence hunted.
For the Angel of
Death spread his wings with a blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the writers of run ons waxed deadly and chill —
Just one mistake could be made — anymore showed no skill.
And there lay the
fragments with their clauses gaped wide,
Lacking subjects or verbs, or something inside;
And as ignorance lay vanquished upon the hot earth,
The Rangers they sneered, and gave it wide berth.
But the pockets
of students no more need to wail,
As the scholarship dollars appear again without fail,
And for all of the monies which are coming on board,
I'll say "Jolly good," and "Praise the Lord!" |
