There’s a purple shirt in Glendale; I’m wearing it today
It’s only our department’s, and brother, do we pay.
When we cough up our dollars, it’s for the common good
Think fiscal generosity, and remember Robin Hood.

We want to help our students; they’re scholars through and through
What other piece of clothing does the good our shirts can do?
You may talk of Wellness lunchbags and gold name tags we get free
But the purple T of English is the only shirt for me.

Where the monsoons are a-drippin’ and the building’s still half dark
I scribble in my little room and pen nonsense for a lark.
On the other hand I know that I must always write no wrongs
For if did there’d be an end to the dollars for my songs.

Oh now I ‘m going to beg you, straight to Dawn to go
And we’ll all chip in together, so our trumpets we can blow.
We’ll play the banjo Friday’s and sing the songs of yore
And the purple T of English will be ours forever more.
