AMA Physician Select - a locator service for licensed physicians in the United States. You can search by name or medical specialty. Listings indicate physician's address, medical school, whether physician is a member of the AMA, etc. Read disclaimer about its contents.

Popular Sites

Gateway Community College Library - an excellent source for medical web sites is maintained by GWC. Click on "Subject" on the first page, then "Medical Index." Navigate from that page to your desired topic.

PubMed - a service of the National Library of Medicine provides access to over 11 million citations from Medline and other journals.

National Library of Medicine - access to the U.S. National Library of Medicine's online catalog and library resources. Also links to research programs and several searchable databases including MEDLINE and TOXNET. NLM's Drug Information Portal (DIP) The Drug Information Portal is a free Web resource from the NLM that provides an informative, user friendly entry-way to current drug information for over 16,000 drugs.

MedlinePlus Health Information - a National Library of Medicine site that provides a wealth of information on health topics for consumers as well as medical professionals. Includes information on diseases, a medical dictionary, a guide to prescription and over-the-counter durgs, and much more. Medline in Spanish

The Merck Manual - a comprehensive, easy to read medical reference work. Available in a text based version, or an interactive multimedia version.

PDR - Physician's Desk Reference - pharmaceutical information (drugs & manufacturers) - (free access, but you must register to use it)

RxList: The Internet Drug Index - provides information on prescription drugs as well as over-the-counter medications and nutriceuticals (herbs and other supplements).

Alzheimer's Association - information about individuals with Alzheimer's disease, as well guidance for family members, caregivers, health professionals, researchers and the media.

American Cancer Society - facts about cancer prevention, treatment, and survival for patients, family members, survivors, and health professionals.

American Diabetes Association - basic information on diabetes, healthy leaving suggestions, community/resources, and information for health professionals

American Heart Association -extensive information related to heart disease. Sections include risk assessment, diseases and conditions, publications including statistics, and a heart and stroke encyclopedia.

American Medical Association - varied information for health professionals and patients. An online "Atlas of the Body" is available in the patients section of the site.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - an organized, easilty navigable site forpublic health and safety information, including fact sheets, articles on diseases, and statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Drugs.com™ - provides drug information for consumers and professionals.

Epilepsy Foundation - "founded in 1968 as the Epilepsy Foundation of America [it is] the only such organization wholly dedicated to the welfare of people with epilepsy..."

Emedicine.com - this site is the home of eMedicine journal, a peer-reviewed online medical journal that is written by medical professionals. It also provides links to recent medical articles from leading medical journals, medical recalls and alerts, clinical calculators/e-tools, and online sources for continuing medical education.

Healthfinder - links to many sources of health information selected from government agencies, non-profit organizations, and universities. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Healthworld Online - a comprehensive website for information on alternative therapies.

HIV Insite - an excellent site from the University of California, San Francisco. Current research and information on HIV/AIDS prevention, policy, and treatment.

Intelihealth - this site, sponsored by Aetna, provides health information and news featuring Harvard Medical School's consumer health information. It includes articles on diseases and medical conditioons, informationon healthy living, and health information geared to specific populations (men, women, seniors). It also provides a medical dictionary and other medical reference sources.

Mayo Clinic Health Oasis - health information and education for the public, reviewed by Mayo Clinic physicians and researchers.

Migraine Awareness Group: Magnum - the National Migraine Awareness Association provides current information on migraine management and treatment.

National Institutes of Health health information, grants and funding opportunities, current health news, and scientific research information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health.

WebMD - a comprehensive health information site for the public. Includes health news, medical reference, and interactive tools.

World Health Organization - a wide variety of information focusing on international health issues.


Medical Journals Online. [Note: If you are looking for full-text journal articles use the databases that can be accessed from the Library Media Center's "Articles & Databases" page. The direct links to the e-journals below may charge a fee for retrieving and/or printing/e-mailing articles.]

Free Medical Journals provides links to about 1, 000 medical journals that are available on the Internet in full-text for free. Journals are listed by title and specialty. Some journals have restrictions on their availability - such as a time delay. Journals can be accessed by date to obtain a table of contents for the issue.

Nursingcenter.com links to online journals, including the American Journal of Nursing.

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) - abstracts from current and past issues are available (1997- ). Selected full text articles are available.

Nurseweek/HealthWeek - medical news and information, and resources for nursing professionals. "Flu Report" lets you enter your zip code for current flu outbreak data. Also has a "Pollen Report" feature, and a drug reference guide.
