Inserting Tables

HTML provides a Table feature to allow you to format information in columns, similar to tabulated text.Tables are also helpful for including graphics next to text.You’ll create a four-column table for typing class information.
1.Click on the New Msg tool.

2.From the menu bar choose Insert.

3.Choose Table.

4.Choose Table.

5.Tab to the Number of columns:

6.Type 4 and tap Return.

The table is inserted into your message.The insertion point is flashing in the first cell.

7.Type BKT101.

8.Tap the Tab key to move to the next cell.

9.Type Beginning Basketweaving.

10.Tap the Tab key to move to the next cell.

11.Type MWF and tap Tab.

12.Type 1-2p.
 

You’ll add information for another class.Even though there isn’t another row showing, if you tap the Tab key to move to the next cell (from the end of a table), a new row is created.

13.Tap the Tab key to create a new row.

14.Type UBA101 and tap the Tab key.

15.Type Underwater Ballet and tap Tab.

16.Type TR and tap Tab.

17.Type 12-2p.
 

You’re done creating the table.Next you’ll add information below the table.

18.Tap the ¯ key to move the insertion point below the table.

19.Type Here is the schedule you requested.


 

Formatting Tables
Next you’ll change the justification used in the columns and the column width.
1.Click in the last cell in the first row (the one that says 1-2p).

1.From the Alignment tool on the formatting toolbar choose Align Right.

2.Click in the last cell in the last row (the one that says 12-2p).

3.From the Alignment tool on the formatting toolbar choose Align Right.

4.Click in the third cell in the first row (the one that says MWF) and set centered alignment.

5.Center the third cell in the last row.

6.Click in the first cell of the first row.

7.Choose Format from the menu bar.

8.Select Table Properties.

9.Click on the Cell tab at the top of the dialog box.

10.Turn on Cell width: by clicking in the checkbox.

11.Change the width from 100% of table to 10% of table.

12.Click on OK.
 

The width of the first column has narrowed to 10% of the total table width.It might be helpful if our schedule of classes listed the class location.Since we don’t have a column for location, you will insert one.

13.Click in the third column (days) of the first row.

14.From the menu bar select Insert.

15.Select Table.

16.Select Column.

17.Click in the new cell on the first line and type Center Mall.

18.Click in the new cell on the last line and type Pool.


 

Viewing the Table

Tables appear different in the composition window than they do when people receive them.To see what your document really looks like, you’ll save it and then view it from the Drafts folder.
1.Click on the Save tool.
2.Close the Composition window.

3.From the Messenger window, select your Drafts folder.

4.Click once on the message to view it.

5.Change the width of your viewing window and watch how your text stays aligned.


 

Removing Table Borders
Your table currently has lines around the cells.Next you’ll remove the cell borders to give your text a more tabulated appearance.
1.From the menu bar select Format.

2.Select Table Properties.

3.Click on the Table tab at the top of the dialog box.

4.Set the Border line width: to 0 pixels.

5.Click on OK.

6.Save the document and close the composition window.

7.View it from the Drafts folder.


 

Deleting a Table Row
You may end up with too many rows in a table, or change your mind about including a row’s worth of information.
1.Position your insertion point in the last row of the table.

2.Select Edit from the menu bar.

3.Select Delete Table.

4.Select Row.
 

The last row of the table is deleted.
