GCC Web Guidelines

Revisions to comply with Maricopa's Technology Standards added 2/18/05

Use of Computing Facilities

Use of Glendale Community College computing facilities and technology is a privilege, not a right, which may be suspended without notice. All users of the college computer system are expected to read and abide by Maricopa's Technology Resource Standards*, and to adhere to federal and state laws and all GCC policies and regulations including the Student Code of Conduct (see Catalog PDF file).

Commercial Activity is Prohibited

No GCC web page shall promote commercial activities for the purpose of personal financial gain.

Copyright Compliance

All material in the GCC Web shall be in full compliance with the law and the Student Code. Materials owned by others may not be displayed on a web page without the express written permission of the owner. Current copyright protection is quite broad and does not require that the owner explicitly state that material is copyright protected.

Privacy Policy

All publications on the GCC Web shall respect the privacy of individuals. Personal information about individuals, including their e-mail addresses, is not to be shared on-line except with the permission of the individuals involved.

Recognizable pictures or videos of people may not be used on a public web page without the written permission of the people in the picture or video. Every person has a right of privacy which includes the right to restrict the use of his/her image.

With the exception of timely and responsible news reporting exercises (as for the student newspaper), a standard model release form must be signed by any individual whose recognizable image is used in an on-line publication. A PDF copy of the form published by Maricopa County Community College District Public Relations is available at http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/webdev/release.pdf.

Web pages represent the college and MCCCD and may display the college logos (http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/logos). Recognized entities of GCC, including but not limited to administrative offices, academic programs, support areas, individual staff or faculty, and student organizations, may create web pages which serve to carry out official college business.

Mandatory Requirements

In accordance with the Technology Resource Standards, the home page of every GCC web site must display the MCCCD legal disclaimer language verbatim, or link to it in a conspicuous manner.

GCC preference is to use the phrase "Legal Disclaimer" prominently on each home page and to link this phrase to GCC's Legal Notice page (http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/legal/). The Legal Notice includes the MCCCD Disclaimer, copyright information, and links to relevant policies and regulations.

Official Disclaimer Language:

All information published online by MCCCD is subject to change without notice. MCCCD is not responsible for errors or damages of any kind resulting from access to its internet resources or use of the information contained therein. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information presented as factual; however errors may exist. Users are directed to countercheck facts when considering their use in other applications. MCCCD is not responsible for the content or functionality of any technology resource not owned by the institution.

The statements, comments, or opinions expressed by users through use of Maricopa's technology resources are those of their respective authors, who are solely responsible for them, and do not necessarily represent the views of the Maricopa County Community College District.

All GCC web sites must comply with Maricopa Technology Resource Standards to advance educational, research, service, operational or management purposes of the college.

Recommended Elements

It is strongly recommended that all college web pages include the following elements (as in a block of text used as a consistent footer): This page provides an example of these recommended elements. The GCC home page and other top links are found at the top left of the page, while the standard footer at the bottom of the page provides the rest.

Suggested Style Guidelines

In general, web pages should be well-designed and written with consideration: Web authors should follow standard rules of accessibility for disabled Internet users. Current recommendations for Web accessibility are available at http://www.w3.org/WAI/ (Web Accessibility Initiative).**

* Maricopa's Computing Resource Standards were revised and renamed Maricopa Technology Resource Standards January 2005.
** It is understood by the GCC Web community that blanket accessibility policies cannot apply to all web sites. For example, the subject matter of some courses (such as Java or Flash) may consist of state-of-the-art web technology that requires special software and hardware to access.
