About Glendale Community College

"We must be willing to move ourselves out of the center of the classroom."
Karen T. Schwalm
1993-94 Recipient of the Paul Pair Endowed Chair
for Integrating Technology into Education Award

Karen Schwalm's work in developing the Electronic Forum as well as her active dedication to involving students in learning through the Internet has earned her the committee's choice for the Paul Pair Endowed Chair award for the year 1993-94.

Karen's educational background that led her toward her current accomplishments is a B.A. degree with a major in English from the University of Illinois, an M.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso, and recent graduate courses leading toward a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at ASU.

It is her continuing efforts to develop quality education for GCC students through the use of technology that led to her being awarded the Paul Pair Endowed Chair. Her continued efforts to expand the Electronic Forum have led to over 20,000 students, district wide, participating in over 500 class journals.

Karen has presented papers, been a guest speaker, and consulted with other colleges and universities to facilitate the expansion and use of the Electronic Forum in Arizona and other states. The Electronic Forum is available at all Maricopa campuses as well as ASU Main and ASU West.

In Karen's words, "The Electronic Forum has become a powerful catalyst for instructional change as instructors follow the same path I did -- where technology gradually but irresistibly transforms teaching in ways that make it more student-centered, inductive, and interactive."
