SPRING 2003                            A GCC ADJUNCT NEWSLETTER FOR GCC ADJUNCT FACULTY No. 3

IN MEMORIAM - PAT TURNER (11/19/1936 - 3/16/2003)
It is with great sadness that I must report that a very remarkable person has recently departed from our community.  For those of you who didn't know Pat, he was an extraordinary man whose philosophy and ideals made him the consummate GCC employee.  During his many years as an adjunct faculty member, he ceaselessly and tirelessly strove to improve the environment for students, co-workers, and other adjunct faculty alike.  His work ethic drove him to work the long hours needed to get the job done and he was always looking for new ways to achieve better results.  I have lived around the corner from Pat for more than twenty years now, but it wasn't until about six months ago that I started to work with him on a regular basis and began to get to know him as a friend as well.  Since he never talked much about himself, it wasn't until after his passing that I learned how much more there was to this unique individual and only wish that there had been more time to get to know him better.  He will be missed by all of us that knew him and, in the grand tradition of cowboys and range riders alike, here's wishing him "Happy Trails!"

The following appeared in The Arizona Republic on Wednesday, March 19, 2003:
PATRICK E. TURNER
Patrick E. Turner, 66, of Glendale, Arizona, died suddenly at home on March 16th, 2003 of natural causes. Pat was born in Ventura, Ca. on November 19, 1936. He grew up on a tiny farm in Athens, Tx. Pat worked his way through college in Texas studying physics and engineering, then moved to Glendale in 1962. Throughout his life, Pat excelled at everything he did. As an aerospace and ballistics engineer, he was highly respected by peers, superiors, and subordinates. He led test programs for nuclear weapons launch systems and consulted on ballistic armor for heads of state. As a sportsman, Pat was active in both the Phoenix and Arizona Varmint Callers Associations for many years. His awards for hunting and calling numbered in the dozens including three state championships and one world championship in predator calling. As a conservationist, Pat began as a grass roots worker In the S.A.V.E. program and eventually served as a director for the Arizona Heritage Alliance. He was truly dedicated to the preservation of Arizona's wildlife and habitat. As a family man, Pat was happily married for almost 40 years. He raised 3 children, all to advanced educations and professional careers. His election to the Glendale School Board helped his own children and thousands of others achieve their educational goals. After retirement from his engineering career, Pat re-educated himself and began a new career as a college instructor, where he helped and inspired thousands of students, young and old. Pat Turner's life has been a remarkable example of what a person can accomplish. He demonstrated enormous personal conviction and courage in winning a long battle with an aggressive cancer. His strength, wisdom and courage will be an inspiration to all of us who remember him. He is survived by his wife Nancy; three children: Scott, Angela, and Reese; and five grandchildren: Kelly, Aaron, Brooke, Brogan and Quentin. Services will be held at the Community Church of Joy, room 1601, 21000 N 75th Ave in Glendale, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday March 20, 2003. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center 1-800-688-1827. (Published in The Arizona Republic on 3/19/2003)

PATRICK E. TURNER MEMORIAL FUND
Pat was always looking for ways to help adjunct faculty improve themselves.  One of his main concerns was that there never seemed to be enough funding available to help defray the costs of continuing education courses, seminars, and other improvement type activities for adjuncts.  In order to both honor Pat with a lasting tribute, and to hopefully accomplish one of his unachieved goals, I am in the process of establishing an endowment fund that will be used to provide a source of financial assistance for adjunct faculty to better themselves.  While I don't yet know exactly how this will be worked out, I have initiated the process with Judy Blake and will be providing more details when things are closer to becoming a reality.

NEW "BRIDGE" FINALLY OPEN AT GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE!
If GCC was a starship, our bridge would be located in the new Administration Building.  If you've recently been having trouble locating certain administrative personnel, try taking a quick tour of the newly opened facility.  It's here that you'll find Dr. Randolph's new office conveniently located alongside those of the Deans, Associate Deans, Employee Resources, Community and Public Relations and Community Education, and the Institute for Effectiveness.  Take a moment to drop by the new "A" building and check it out for yourself ...
