SPRING 2003                           A GCC ADJUNCT NEWSLETTER FOR GCC ADJUNCT FACULTY No. 4

ADJUNCT FACULTY ASSOCIATION ELECTIONS - 5/3/2003 - 1:30pm-3:30pm
The Adjunct Faculty Association is holding its annual elections on Saturday, May 3rd, at Phoenix College from 1:30pm to 3:30pm (Room B-121).  I would encourage you to attend this meeting to learn more about the AFA and to meet in person the people who jointly represent you at the District level.  At this time, there are still some vacant Board positions that need to be filled and if you are interested in getting involved, please contact Paula Garner at paulagar@msn.com for more information.

Our previous campus representatives for this year were Linda Landrum and Pat Turner.  Linda has asked me to continue in her place on the Board and I have submitted my name as the candidate for Campus Representative for GCC.  If you would like to run in my place, please let me know and I'll be more than happy to assist you in this task; regardless of whether or not I serve on the Board, I plan to continue to attend meetings and provide whatever input I can to strengthen the role of adjuncts both at GCC and throughout MCCCD as well.

WELCOMING RECEPTION FOR DR. RANDOLPH - 4/25/2003 - 12:00pm-1:30pm
The GCC Faculty Senate is hosting a reception this coming Friday, April 25th, to officially welcome Dr. Randolph as our fourth GCC President.  The reception will be held in the lobby of the Physical Sciences Building from Noon to 1:30pm.  If you have an opportunity to drop by, please do so and show your continuing support for someone that has made so many recent improvements for adjuncts in such a short period of time.  I'm sure that I speak for all adjuncts at GCC in proclaiming:  "Welcome, Dr. Randolph!"

GCC ADJUNCT FACULTY ORIENTATIONS
There will not be a Summer Adjunct Faculty Orientation as originally proposed.  While the Administration was willing to follow through with this, the amount of effort required to host one of these just isn't justifiable in terms of how many attendees would actually show up during the summer session.  It makes a lot more sense to focus on having several Fall orientations that would be modeled on the ones that were held this past January.  Since these were preserved for posterity on videotape, I will inquire about having copies available for checkout in the Library Media Center for anyone that would like to benefit from the information presented.  As plans for the Fall 2003 orientations become finalized, I will let everyone know the details when I get them.

FINAL ROSTERS DUE 5/13/2003 (EVENING) AND 5/16/2003 (DAY)
Final grade rosters will be issued on May 5th.  Grades for evening classes are due May 13th at 7:00pm while grades for day classes are due May 16th at 3:00pm.

Change from past semesters: A last date of attendance must be submitted for all F or Z grades in addition to W and Y grades. This is due to a change in federal financial aid regulations.

GCC CAMPUS COUNCIL
I would like to suggest the formation of a "GCC Campus Council" that would meet once a month at GCC to prepare items to bring before the AFA and to help with the distribution of an AFA newsletter that I will be proposing should be sent to each campus.  I would think that three people (other than myself) would be needed to serve as the joint council and would need to meet for an hour or so the week prior to the monthly AFA meetings.  My instinct tells me that there are quite a few adjuncts out there that already spend most of their time on campus for one reason or another and it wouldn't require much additional commitment to serve on the Council.  If you would like to be involved in adjunct activities at the campus level, please let me know.
