entire M & O crew who worked hard to minimize the inconvenience and the length of time service was disrupted.

You didn’t have to hit the beach in San Diego, Cabo or Padre Island to dip your toes in the water or hear the gentle lapping of waves against sand.  Last week, you just had to work in the Enrollment Center, Testing and Disability Services, or the Student Union.

The Ides of March (March 15th) lived up to its ominous historical

reputation with yet another water main break, this one just north of the Enrollment Center.  M & O crews scurried to remedy the problem, which tested the patience of employees in the Business, EC, LA, O1, O2, O5, SU and TDS buildings,

As the extent of the break became better known, the entire crew never lost their sense of humor, joking about a pool, a koi pond, a Jacuzzi, and finally, an oasis in the desert.

The final resolution was to refer to all future class “breaks” as “recesses,” since that implies a lot more fun than the “breaks” we’ve had lately!

Palette engineers and a host of Information Technology support staff worked feverishly over Spring Break to improve student and instructor login times that were unacceptably long the week prior to the break.

The server that stores student data was re-engineered and

upgraded to three identical first level servers.  Because these servers are now so fast, the upgrade exposed other, slower parts of the network process.  The server that houses programs has now also been upgraded to dual 2.6 Ghz Pentium IV processors and 4

Gigabytes of memory.  Network and disk access for all servers is being evaluated for potential bottlenecks as well.

Student networks have been reconfigured to reduce traffic on all virtual and real network segments.  Each section of the  Instructional Palette
