Telling your printer type from Network printer lists

There are two ways to tell what type of networked printer you are printing to:

The first way is to observe the printer and find its name on the chassis. Primarily we are supporting four networked printers for faculty and staff use. They are the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 5M, Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4000, HP LaserJet 4050 series, HP LaserJet 8000 series and the Apple Select 360 printers. The HP's name is on the front left of the printer and the Apple's name is on the top middle. The HP gives the full name, while the Apple printer only says "Apple Select", but since the only Apple Select printer we use is the 360, you can assume the printer will be the Apple Select 360.

The second method has to do with our network naming convention and you will see this as you are setting up your printer. For the printers that are typically available for faculty and staff use we have used the following naming convention:

Location_Printer-type

An example of this would be LA-113_LJ5. In this case the printer is located in LA-131 and is of type LJ5. The list below outlines what each acronym stands for.

LJ5  HP LaserJet 5M

LW12 Apple LaserWriter 12/600

S360 Apple Select 360

5SI HP LaserJet 5SI

LJ4000 HP LaserJet 4000

LJ4050 HP LaserJet 4050 series

LJ8000 HP LaserJet 8000 series

There is only one of LW12 and four of the 5SI. The LW12 is located in the Training Classroom (HT2-149) and the 5SI s are located in different areas across campus.

In Windows98 you will select the Apple Select 360 driver for the S360 printer and the best bet for the LJ5 is the HP LaserJet 5P/5MP Postscript driver. The drivers for the HP LaserJet 4000 and 4050 are at the bottom of the list of printers in the HP category.

For the Macintosh the best printer drivers to use are the LaserWriter 8 and then click on the name of the printer that you want to use.
