Associates of Science - Special Requirements (AS-SR) Degree in Geology

The Associates of Science with Special Requirements (AS-SR) degree in Geology is designed for geology majors planning to transfer to Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, or University of Arizona. The degree consists of 64 semester credit hours including the 35 hours of the Arizona General Education Curriculum for Science (AGEC-S) block. The core of the degree is independent of the student's choice of university. The courses that are required for a specific university are listed separately from core. Note: the credit hours and course numbers listed are specific to the Maricopa Community Colleges. Check the Course Equivalency Guide (CEG) for other courses or institutions.

Core Requirements (52-54 hours depending on the number of calculus credits):

Common General Education Courses all satisfying their respective AGEC-S requirements (18 hours)

6 credit hours for First Year Composition (FYC) (click here for instructions on how to find courses that may satisfy these or click here for a list)
6 credit hours for Social & Behavioral Sciences (SB) (click here for instructions on how to find courses that may satisfy these or click here for a list)
6 credit hours for Humanities and Fine Arts (HU) (click here for instructions on how to find courses that may satisfy these or click here for a list)
In choosing these courses be sure to choose one that also simultaneously satisfies the Cultural Awareness Area (look for a C in the General Education area designation box within the links above or click here for a list)

Common Courses for Geology Majors (20 of the 36 hours satisfy the math, science, and subject science requirements of the AGEC-S)

8-10 credit hours: Calculus I (MAT220 or 221) & Calculus II (MAT230 or 231) also satisfy the 3 hour AGEC-S math requirement
8 credit hours: Physical Geology (GLG101 & 103) and Historical Geology GLG102 and 104) satisfy the 6 hour AGEC-S subject option and simultaneously satisfy the Global and Historical Awareness criteria for graduation
8 credit hours: General Chemistry I (CHM151 & 151LL) and General Chemistry II (CHM152 & 152LL or CHM154 & 154LL)
10 credit hours: University Physics I (PHY115) and University Physics II (PHY116)
Either the Chemistry or Physics (or an 8 credit hour combination of the two) also satisfies the 8 hour AGEC science requirement.

University Specific Requirements & Electives (10-12 hours depending on the number of calculus credits in the core):

For Arizona State University: Arizona State University School of Earth and Space Exploration Overview

4-5 credit hours: Calculus III; MAT240 (5 hrs) or 241 (4 hrs)
5-6 credit hours: Electives. We recommend contacting a faculty advisor in ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration for advice on electives.

For Northern Arizona University: Northern Arizona University Geology Program Overview

4-5 credit hours: Calculus III; MAT240 (5 hrs) or 241 (4 hrs)
5-6 credit hours: Electives. We recommend contacting a faculty advisor in NAU's Geology Department for advice on electives.

For University of Arizona: University of Arizona Department of Geosciences Overview

4 credit hours: Demonstration of foreign language proficiency at the second semester level.
'6 credit hours: Electives although 4 hours of these might be needed as a prerequisite to a second semester foreign language. We recommend contacting a faculty advisor in UA's Department of Geosciences for advice on electives.
