Geology Articulation Task Force
Since 1994, I have served on the state's Geology Articulation Task Force, a committee consisting of geology teachers representing the state's universities and community colleges that decides how courses/degrees transfer from one institution to another. Under suspicious circumstances ;-), I was elected to serve two terms (1997-1998) as the Chairperson of this committee. During my tenure as Chair, I collaborated closely with folks at ASU and our District to establish the Global Awareness designation for GLG101 in addition to identifying problems in- and potential solutions for- the new AGEC standards. I served again as the co-chair for the 2005-2006 academic year in which the committee drafted a new AGEC-S and lobbied the Arizona Senate on legislation that would have affected geology education.
Instructional Council
I am currently a member of the Geology Instructional Council, a district-wide committee consisting of geology teachers from each college. The instructional council evaluates new course proposals and changes to existing courses.
ACEPT- Arizona Collaboration for the Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers
For the past few years, Bob Thompson, Steve Kadel, Pam Nelson, and I have been involved as faculty representatives/consultants to the ACEPT program (an NSF sponsored project administrated through Arizona State University). The ACEPT program's focus is to examine and perhaps re-define the curriculum of introductory college level science courses to make them less intimidating and more relevant, more hands-on, and more problem-solving oriented to future K-12 teachers. The intent of the project is to develop new teaching styles that these future educators may integrate into their classes to turn stem the tide of science indifference or ignorance in future generations. As part of our involvement, I spearheaded the effort to produce GeoScape, an instructional landscape built adjacent to the Physical Sciences Building.
