GLG101 extra credit opportunities- Spring, 2012

You may earn up to 15 extra credit points in GLG101 using one of the following two options. However, you may participate in more than one activity for your own personal or professional edification. All extra credit is due by 4/27/2011 at 4:00 p.m.

Option #1- Water or Energy Conservation in the Home

You may earn up to 15 points of extra credit by demonstrating that you can reduce your overall home water usage OR electrical usage this semester.
Water Usage: Research ways to reduce your water usage and implement them in your residence. Demonstrate that they are effective by presenting an example of your water bill before you implemented the conservations methods and after. Both must be from this semester. Write a short report describing:
(1) how you were able to conserve water; and
(2) the pros and cons of water conservation.

Energy Usage:
Research ways to reduce your energy usage and implement them in your residence. Demonstrate that they are effective by presenting an example of your energy bill before you implemented the conservations methods and after. You must use the energy company's data on your usage relative to the same month in the previous year.
Write a short report describing:
(1) how you were able to conserve energy; and
(2) the pros and cons of energy conservation.

Note: if you do not receive an itemized water or energy bill, you will not be able to use this option.

Option #2- Special Events
STEM Club, Environmental Club, or Greens Efforts Committee Presentations.
In addition, the above clubs often have guest speakers or presentations of geological interest. You may earn up to 15 points by attending these presentations at 5 points per presentation. Be sure you get the club adviser to verify your attendance and participation. Presentations dates this semester are:

Wed, Feb. 8, 7:00-8:15 pm, SU-104E: Catastrophic Geology in the Solar System. SpeakerDr. Moses Milazzo, Research Geophysicist, U.S. Geological Survey, Astrogeology Research Center, Flagstaff, AZ [University of Arizona (BS Mathematics, PhD Planetary Sciences) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter / HiRISE Team]
Fri, Feb. 17, 2:00-3:00 pm, MA-142: Update on NASA Missions and other space exploration. SpeakerDr. David Williams, sponsored by the STEM club.

Option #3- Tucson Gem & Mineral Show (Spring Semesters only).

Every year, the world's largest gem and mineral show is held in Tucson, AZ. In addition to the exhibition of spectacular museum collections and educational displays, gem and mineral dealers from all over the world gather to buy, sell, and trade minerals. Details on the show, including costs, maps, activities are available on line at http://www.tgms.org. There are numerous activities for children as well (check out the University of Arizona's Junior Education in the northwest corner of the Arena- not the main Exhibition Hall, but the Arena). In addition to the main show at the Tucson Convention Center, nearly every major hotel in the surrounding region has been converted into a gem and mineral mall. Dealers have converted their hotel rooms into little gem & mineral shops. Bargaining is commonplace. Tent villages will surround the convention center and offer still more dealers. It is quite literally the "Superbowl" of the gem & mineral world.

For up to 15 points of extra credit download and complete the exercise and map.
- Complete the exercise by visiting the specified exhibits in the exercise.
- As indicated in the exercise, write a brief description of your mineral show experience.
- Attach evidence that you actually attended the show. This evidence may be in the form of your admission ticket stub or a photograph of you in the TCC at one of the central display cases. If you see me there, I can initial your exercise.
