Brittlebush (Asteraceae - Encelia farinosa)
The many faces of brittlebush...

Brittlebush is drought deciduous and produces morphologically different types of leaves with seasonal changes in temperature and moisture.  These photos, taken 11/98, show the plant after a long dry summer.  Leaves are few, small, and densely hairy.

The following spring (3/99), leaves were numerous, flowers few at White Tanks.  This one, near the restrooms, may have had access to water from leaky pipes or roadside drainage.
This one (3/99), growing in town near ASU-West campus in Glendale, shows what brittlebush looks like at its best.  In a very good year, they look like this at White Tanks, too.

April 2000 looks more promising, judging from the flower buds seen here,
early in the month.  Winter rains were late but plentiful.
