I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to continue to give you a basic introduction to the INTERNET.  It will survey various tools that are used to access the Internet. The course covers several major areas:
The work for this class will be done on Windows based computers using Internet Explorer (7.0 or above). This course can NOT be completed with America OnLine. 

Course Objectives

  1. Analyze and evaluate various resource discovery systems available on the Internet/World Wide Web (WWW).
  2. Use popular resource discovery systems available on the Internet/WWW.
  3. Perform information search and retrieval operations using Internet services.
  4. Perform Internet file transfers.
  5. Control Input with Web pages using HTML.
  6. Enhance a basic home page sheet with HTML

II. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS

The following two items are required for this course:
 
A USB flash memory stick.
HTML - Illustrated Complete - THIRD Edition

This book will be referred to as the "HTML" book.   The lessons for this class indicate the page numbers. Please carefully note the changes as listed in the lesson. Web pages that are developed as you go through this text are graded as practice work as part of your project assignment.

III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES

A. Attendance

You must start the course within one week of your start date or you may be withdrawn for the course. Starting the course includes: reading the syllabus, announcements, and the READ THIS!!! tab, and completing and submitting project 1.

B. Course Structure

This course is organized into seven Lessons.  Each Lesson covers one chapter from the text. You need to carefully work your way through each Lesson.  Do NOT jump around from one part to another.  Each Lesson has the following parts:
  • Getting Started - This will consists of an overview of what will be covered in the lesson and any items that you should do prior to starting a particular lesson.
  • Reading / Practice - There are two types of reading
    • The first type is assigned reading from the text. - Do not skip doing the step by step hands-on practice in the textbook.
    • The second type is OPTIONAL information.  This is additional information that students have found helpful and is indicated with the  graphic.

  • Project Assignment - After you have completed the Reading / Practice portion of a Lesson, you will then be ready to start the Project Assignment. Your Project Assignment files will be submitted in BlackBoard to be graded. Once an assignment has been graded it may not be resubmitted..
  • Project Assignment - After you have completed the Reading / Practice portion of a Lesson, you will then be ready to start the Project Assignment. Your completed Project Assignment files will be submitted in BlackBoard to be graded. Once an assignment has been graded it may not be resubmitted.
  • Quiz - At the end of each Lesson is a 10 question multiple choice Quiz.  You may take the quiz only one time. Each quiz is worth 10 points.

IV. GRADING AND COMMUNICATIONS

Please carefully read the following.
  • If you want to ask the instructor a question or send the instructor a message, send an email to kate.sylvester@gcmail.maricopa.edu. Typically these messages will be replied to with one to two school days.
  • Assignments are graded about twice a week.
  • Course grades are calculated once a week.  If you need a grade at an earlier time you, send an email to kate.sylvester@gcmail.maricopa.edu to request special arrangements several days in advance.
  • All assignments MUST be sent in using the CIS133BA pages in BlackBoard.
  • DO NOT send Assignments through regular email to the instructor.

A. Grading Scale

Grades are an evaluation of the student's learning. Your grade will reflect your level of competency. Your letter grade will be determined by the following scale (please take note that the grade of "D" is not available in this course):

B. Converting Points to a Grade

Your letter grade will be determined by the following scale  Students taking this course Pass/Fail must achieve a score of 280 or better to Pass.  Course grades are calculated once a week.  If you need a grade at an earlier time you, send an email to kate.sylvester@gcmail.maricopa.edu to request special arrangements several days in advance. once a week.

V. ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT POLICIES

A. College Employee Acknowledgement

If you are an employee (full-time, part-time or work study) of any of the Maricopa Community Colleges, then you must send an email to kate.sylvester@gcmail.maricopa.edu with the subject line of "Employee" Please include your first and last names along with your class (CIS133BA) and section number and which of the MCCCD colleges you work at. (Occasionally, I get students telling me they work at Blimpes and such.)

B. Student's Requiring Special Accommodations.

C. Extensions

No extensions are given for this one credit course.

D. Academic Dishonesty

Students are expected to do their own assignments.  Instances of academic dishonesty will result in NO CREDIT for the assignments for all who participate; repeated instances will result in a final grade of F.

It is the student's responsibility to read and be familiar with the course syllabus. Additionally it is the student's responsibility to be familiar with college policies covered in the Glendale Community College catalog and Student Handbook.
