Greetings and welcome to the Glendale Community College Microsoft Certification Frequently Asked Questions page. This page is not to be confused with similar pages on the WEB that are sponsored by Microsoft®. This page is for Glendale Community College students that are interested in pursuing Microsoft Certification in Windows 2000 or 2003.
Are the courses at Glendale College actually taught by certified instructors?
Answer: Yes, all MST courses are taught by Microsoft Certified instructors. Most of the faculty are also Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCT).
Which course should I take first?
Answer: It is important to follow the correct sequence and try to take the classes in their numerical order, this works for the GCC program requirements as well as the Microsoft recommended sequence of classes. See the Glendale Community College RoadMap to MCSE Certification.
What about prerequisites?
Answer: The prerequisites can sometimes be waived by the instructor depending on the level of experience in computers of the student. It is strongly recommended, however, that you have taken CIS105, or equivalent course, and be familiar with some MS DOS. You must take a drop/add slip to the instructor for his or her signature to waive the prerequisites.
What about evening MST classes?
Answer: Yes, we have all of the MST classes available in the evening and also on Fridays and Saturdays. The electives are not offered as often during this time due to scheduling constraints.
How much does each class cost?
Answer: All but a few of the MST classes are currently 3 semester hour classes. The current cost for classes is about $55 per semester hour, other normal registration costs ($5) and the cost of the text. Most texts currently cost between $50-$99. There is an additional cost for a mobile docking tray with your own hard disk (2-3 GB) so you may use their own installed copy of Microsoft® Windows XP/2000/2003.
How does the new Microsoft Networking AAS degree affect the GCC CIS AAS degree?
Answer: The two degrees are distinct and separate, however, anyone working on their GCC CIS AAS can easily move over to the Microsoft Networking AAS degree and vice versa. Most of the requirements in each degree are the same, the Microsoft degree does not have the programming languages required.
If I have already taken CIS190, do I have to take MST140?
Answer: You must take either MST140 or CNT140 to qualify for the MST program. These courses cover the essential information necessary to understand the terminology and concepts of Windows 2000. The CIS190 course at GCC is the same as the MST140 course so you can take the course either as MST140 or CIS190, depending on the requirements of the degree you are taking. For example, CIS190 is required for the CIS degree, MST140 is required for the MST degree but they are the same class so you can take it either way.
