Student Goals: Personal Enrichment, General Education

Humanities courses present major artistic, literary, and musical achievements in world culture. They show how these milestones are interrelated and reflect their historical, philosophical, and social contexts. Emphasis is on linking human creative expression to roots in various global cultures to discover what makes us human.

HUM250, HUM251, and HUM260 are interdisciplinary courses and are team taught by members of the Art, English, Music, and Philosophy departments.

Courses to meet the general education Humanities and Fine Arts requirement. All HUM courses meet this requirement for the college’s associate degrees, and all HUM courses transfer. HUM250 and HUM251 can also be used for the Literacy and Critical Inquiry requirement for the associate degrees. A student who completes both HUM250 and HUM251 will have met the 6 hour HU requirement and need NOT take a course with a different prefix. At ASU the course fulfills either Humanities/Fine Arts (HU) or Literacy and Critical Inquiry (L) as well as Historical Awareness (H) requirements. HUM260 transfers to Arizona State University as both Humanities (HU) and Cultural Awareness (C).

An exploration of human expression in contemporary arts and sciences. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D,Su1)

Introduction to Television Arts / 3 credits 3 periods
History and development of electronic media and its impact on popular arts. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D)

HUM210
Contemporary Cinema / 3 credits 3 periods
A study of contemporary films, directors, and critics with emphasis on evaluating film as an art form. Prerequisites: None. (F,D,S)

HUM250
Ideas and Values in the Humanities / 3 credits 3 periods
An historical analysis of the interrelationships of art, architecture, literature, music, and philosophy from the early civilizations to the Renaissance, including western and non-western cultures. Prerequisites: ENG101. (F,D,E)

Ideas and Values in the Humanities / 3 credits 3 periods
An historical analysis of the interrelationships of art, architecture, literature, music, and philosophy from the Renaissance to modern period, including Western and Non-Western cultures. Prerequisites: ENG101. (S,D,E)

Intercultural Perspectives / 3 credits 3 periods
Cultural, literary, and artistic expressions of Native, Hispanic, and African Americans. Includes traditional and modern work and contribution to American civilization. Prerequisites: None. (O)

HUM292
The Art Of Storytelling / 3 credits 3 periods
Explore the art and origin of storytelling. Provide a variety of storytelling techniques, styles and exercises to enhance the delivery of telling stories. Assist in the integration and application of storytelling to the learning environment in the classroom. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D)
