Design courses prepare students for entry level positions in the design and decoration industry and fulfill personal interest. Knowledge gained in Design Methods & Techniques prepares students for the business world or to continue for a degree in Interior Design.

Take Interior Design courses to:

  • Explore Career Opportunities such as designing residential or model homes, hotels, office interiors, and stage sets. Begin with INT105.
  • Develop personal Home Decorating skills and talents. Learn the basic design principles and elements of design. Discover how to best select carpet, wallpaper, fabric, window treatments, furniture and accessories.
  • Gain knowledge about Building or Purchasing a Home.
  • Meet a general education Humanities Requirement through INT115 and INT120.
  • Prepare for Selling a Home. Learn how to make a home more marketable through design.
  • Plan a Remodel. Learn how to make space more efficient, effective and aesthetic.
  • Gain Expertise in current Career Fields.

Home Furnishings and Materials / 30 credits

Program Description: The Home Furnishings and Materials certificate is designed to provide the student with a working knowledge of the residential home furnishings industry, including basic design elements and principles, color theory, historical architecture and furniture, fabrics, and other materials used through the home environment. Elective coursework allows the student to take specific courses that will help them prepare for the particular segment of the industry they are most interested in pursuing.

Note: Students must earn a grade of “C” or better for all courses required within the program.

Introduction to Interior Design / 3 credits 3 periods

Introduction to the profession of interior design, including design process, elements and principles of design, and basic concepts of space planning and furniture layout. Development of design vocabulary relative to architectural details, furnishings, and finishes. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D,E)

Historical Architecture and Furniture / 3 credits 3 periods

Historical survey of the development of furniture, interiors, and architecture from antiquity to the 19th Century. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D,E)

Twentieth Century Architecture and Furniture / 3 credits 3 periods

Survey of the development of furniture, interiors, and architecture from the 19th Century to the present. Emphasis is on modern architects and designers. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D,E)

Introduction to Architectural Desktop for Interior Design / 3 credits 6 periods

Introduction to Architectural Desktop AutoCAD(tm) tools for the interior designer with emphasis on industry-accepted standards for interior design following American Institute of Architects (AIA) guidelines. Prerequisites: DFT121. (O)

Color and Design / 3 credits 6 periods

Introduction to the theory and application of color as related to the elements and principles of design. Light and its effect on color. Emphasis on the development of presentation skills for the field of interior design. Prerequisites: None. (S,E)

Fabrics for Interiors / 3 credits 3 periods

Study of the properties, design, and performance characteristics of interior fabrics. Psychological and cultural impact of textiles on the built environment. Role of the interior designer in working with textiles. Introduction to regulations and codes within the textile industry. Prerequisites: None. (O)

Interior Materials / 3 credits 6 periods

Properties, performance, maintenance, sustainability and general characteristic of interior finishes, furnishings, and equipment. Emphasis on building a resource file of interior finishes, furnishings, and equipment sources. Prerequisites: INT105. Prerequisites or Corequisites: INT160. (O)
