Middle Management
Associate in Applied Science (AAS) / 64 credits

Middle management positions cover a wide spectrum of jobs involving the supervision of people and functions. Positions include department manager, territorial manager, foreman, sales manager, financial manager, product manager, and many other roles covering various specialty areas.

Qualified people for supervisory positions are continually in high demand. Entry into a supervisory job with eventual movement into middle management position(s) is the usual progress.

Program Description: The purposes of the AAS degree program in middle management are

  1. To train students for full-time employment in supervisory positions upon graduation;
  2. To upgrade the training, through a degree program, for personnel already involved in supervisory positions;
  3. To provide additional training in specific areas as needed for those already employed in middle management.

The general studies courses required for the Associate in Applied Science degree provide an opportunity for students to broaden their background in a variety of fields.

Students completing the program should find rewarding careers in sales/merchandising, distribution, wholesaling, finance, industry, business ownership, and the expanding services industries.

Note: Required courses may not be available every semester, students, degree seeking or transfer, should consult with a department advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete degree requirements in an expedient manner.

Retail Management
Associate in Applied Science (AAS) / 64 credits

Program Description: The Retail Management degree is designed to prepare individuals working in the retail management, food industry, and related fields, for the mid-level management position challenges of the future. The curriculum encompasses business essentials and also emphasizes the skill sets needed for effective management and communication in the work environment. Instruction will provide the background and knowledge necessary for students to develop the judgment skills they must exercise as business managers.

Supervision Certificate / 33 credits

Program Description: The purpose of the certificate program in Supervision is to provide fundamental information to students interested in starting and/or advancing in a career of business management. The program also will prepare students to pursue advanced programs and/or degrees. Students completing the program should find employment in sales/merchandising, distribution, wholesaling, finance, industry, business ownership, and/or services industries.

Note: Students should consult with a department advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete certificate requirements in an expedient manner. Due to limited course offerings, degree seeking students may find it necessary to extend completion time lines and attend both day and evening classes.

Overview of the foundations of supervision and how to get things done within an organization through other people. The functions of planning, organizing, staffing, motivating and controlling presented. Prerequisites: None.

Introduction to Supply Chain Management / 2 credits 2 periods

Overview of control and flow of materials from the supplier to the consumer. Elements and interrelationships of the supply chain including supply management, planning and control, and physical distribution. Prerequisites: None.

The evolution of purchasing to supply management. Underlying fundamentals of tactical purchasing and strategic supply management. Prerequisites: MGT102 or permission of department.

Owning and Operating a Small Business / 3 credits 3 periods

Starting, organizing, and operating a small business, including location, finance, management processes, advertisement and promotion, credit, inventory control, and ethics. Prerequisites: None.

Free Enterprise Practicum / 1 credit 1 period

Management team approach to development and implementation of an economic education project for a selected public. Project focus on improving understanding of current economic issues and a greater appreciation for the free enterprise system. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor.

Covers the historical, legal, and environmental parameters surrounding current labor/management relations, including contract negotiations and grievance procedures. Prerequisites: None. MGT101, or MGT175, or MGT229 suggested, but not required.

Total Quality Management (TQM)

TQM105
Writing for Quality Results / 2 credits 2 periods

Theory and practice of writing business correspondence in a quality-oriented organization. Includes the orientation of the writer to the internal/external customer’s needs and writing in positive, negative and persuasive settings. Prerequisites: Appropriate English placement test score in ENG101, or “C” or better in ENG071. OAS108 and TQM101 or TQM101AA and TQM101AB are recommended.

Introduction to Total Quality / 3 credits 3 periods

Examines the concepts of quality as they relate to any organization. Focuses on the history, gurus, rationale, and basic principles of total quality management. Recognizes the scope and requirements for a Total Quality development effort. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,D,E)

TQM204
Team Roles and Dynamics / 3 credits 3 periods

Focuses on basic concepts and tools associated with quality improvement to help teams function effectively. Participants use theory and practice to work as a team, plan, and conduct good meetings, manage logistics and details, gather useful data, analyze the data, communicate clearly and persuasively ideas and results with confidence and impact, and implement change. TQM206
Customer Focus Systems / 3 credits 3 periods

Identifying who the customer is, assessing what is important to the customer, and assuring that quality organizational processes and procedures are in place not only to meet but also to exceed customer expectations. Methods for gathering and analyzing data to measure customer service and satisfaction. Prerequisites: None. Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet, TQM201 and TQM202 recommended. (F,E)

Leadership for Quality / 3 credits 3 periods

The changing role from manager to leader/coach/counselor/ facilitator in a quality oriented organization. Methods for empowering employees in a team setting. Tools for planning, goal-setting, and problem solving. Professional development to enhance the quality team environment. Techniques for employee and team motivation, evaluation, and recognition.
