Student Goals: General Education, Career-related, Personal Interest

History concerns the political, economic, social, and cultural events and achievements of humanity. Historians analyze and evaluate this material in an attempt to understand the past and interpret the present.

History courses at Glendale Community College serve students who intend to major in history at a four-year institution, students who need these courses in preparation for other courses and to fulfill general education requirements at most universities, and students choosing them for personal interest. Students intending to pursue a baccalaureate degree in history should consult with a departmental advisor to plan their program.

Those with a baccalaureate in history will find the teaching field crowded. Careers with museums, historical societies, special libraries, archives, government agencies, and communication media (consulting and research) should be explored. Because of its breadth as a part of the liberal arts curriculum, a baccalaureate in history provides excellent preparation for any occupation emphasizing communications skills and personal relations, e.g., journalism, civil service, law, foreign service, publishing and public relations.
