The courses offered at GCC are designed to teach the concepts and skills of American Sign Language. Students engaged in social work, counseling, health services, education, and related fields will find these courses useful. The courses listed here are required in the Interpreter for the Deaf Curriculum at Phoenix College. This can be either a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree or a Certificate of Completion in Interpreter for Deaf. Credits in General Education requirements may be taken on this campus toward the completion of the above programs, including ENG101, First-Year Composition; COM100, Introduction to Human Communication; CRE101, Critical and Evaluative Reading; and MAT102, Mathematical Concepts/Applications.

Two years of ASL satisfies the foreign language requirement for most universities. Check with a GCC advisor to make certain your transfer institution allows you to meet the foreign language requirement with ASL courses.

Students planning to complete the Interpreters’ program should consult with Phoenix College advisors prior to registering for courses.
