Art - Fine Art Emphasis Associate in Arts (AA)
Associate in General Studies (AGS)

Student Goals: Career-related

Fine Arts occupations are concerned with creating fine arts works whose primary purpose is to be viewed for aesthetic content. The major factor distinguishing occupations in this group from those in commercial art is the retention of responsibility for selection of theme, subject matter, medium, and manner of execution.

Opportunities for this occupation rest largely with a person's own talent, determination, and luck. This program prepares students to be practicing artists in a number of different media as well as providing the artistic preparation to become successful art instructors.

Program Description: This program is designed for students who wish to specialize in fine art. If the student intends to transfer to a four-year institution, he or she should consult the catalog of that institution for appropriate lower division courses which can then be taken at Glendale.

Note: Required courses may not be available every semester, students, degree seeking or transfer, should consult with an advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete degree requirements in an expedient manner.

Recommended Courses:

The following courses would be acceptable at most four-year schools for lower division credit. If the student is seeking the AA degree, he or she should choose those needed for that degree, plus additional courses from the list that best suit his or her needs.

Alternative Photographic Processes / 3 credits 6 periods
Emphasis on development of alternative photographic processes including technique, aesthetics, and creative imagery. Exploration of various types of non-silver photographic processes including cyanotype, Van Dyke, Polaroid imaging, and others. Prerequisites: None. (O)

Fundamentals of digital photography. Includes camera operations, exposure techniques, introduction to digital output, and theory of digital photography. Prerequisites: None. (F,S, D,E)

Intermediate Digital Photography / 3 credits 6 periods
Intermediate theory and techniques of digital photography. Aesthetic awareness and personal expression from image capture through intermediate techniques in the digital darkroom. Introduction to high-resolution digital output. Prerequisites: ART142 or permission of instructor. (F,S,D,E,Su1)
