AJS courses provide information for personal interest and related careers, but are designed primarily for those interested in careers in law enforcement and related fields. Students take these courses to:

• Enhance Employment. The AJS290 seminar series provides specialized training for those in law enforcement desiring to enhance their skills. These seminars are available on a limited basis.
• To Prepare for Related Fields . Students in other fields may well find courses such as AJS101, or 225 of interest.
• For Personal Interest. Those seeking training in the safe and ethical use of firearms may enroll in AJS151, 153, and/or 154. AJS152 provides first aid information.

Administration of Justice - Associate in Applied Science
AAS 3397 / 64 credits

The Administration of Justice program is designed to inform and prepare men and women for careers in the fields of law enforcement, corrections, and related technical occupations. In addition, the program provides practitioners of law enforcement and corrections the opportunity for professional growth and development in their field, or the background to continue their education at a four-year institution. (Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should satisfy the general education requirements for the Associate in Arts (AA) degree)

Note: Students should consult with a department advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete degree requirements in an expedient manner. Required courses may not be available every semester or year. Due to limited course offerings, degree seeking students may find it necessary to extend completion time lines and attend both day and evening classes.

Program Description:

The Administration of Justice Studies Degree is interdisciplinary in nature and provides the student with a broad based knowledge of the criminal justice field. It prepares the students of excellent character and reputation for careers in Administration of Justice, including, but not limited to: law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole officer, and social services in community based agencies/organizations.

Law Enforcement Training Academy Certificate
CCL 5485 / 30 credits

The Glendale Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy is fully certified by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards Training Board (AZPOST), which is the peace officer certification agency in the state. The academy spans two semesters with the first certifying the successful participants as Limited Authority Officers with full peace officer powers when in the presence of a fully certified officer. The second semester completes their basic training and they become fully certified. Because the training is conducted over two semesters, most participants are appointed to a reserve officer position with their agency.

Persons interested in attending the academy may be sent by a law enforcement agency or apply for college sponsorship. For agency sponsorship, they contact an agency they are interested in becoming a reserve officer with and participate in their testing process. If they are successful, the agency authorizes the academy to accept them. The testing normally consists of a written exam, an oral board evaluation, a polygraph test, a psychological evaluation, a background investigation, a medical exam, and a fitness test. The program is a challenging and very demanding curriculum, requiring physical and intellectual stamina. However, the certification attained allows successful participants to enter an exciting and rewarding career.

Arizona statutes allow academies to appoint cadets to complete peace officer training. Upon successful completion of the academy, these cadets will have 18 months to seek employment with a law enforcement agency. If appointed to a position with an agency, (after passing all aspects of the background investigation), they will be eligible for AZPOST peace officer certification.

Those interested in attending the academy while being affiliated with an agency will need to contact the human resource or personnel departments at a law enforcement agency and inquire about their application process.

Program Description:

This certificate program is designed for students wishing to pursue a law enforcement career as a law enforcement officer.  The student will develop skills in eight functional areas:  Introduction to Law Enforcement, Law and Legal Matters, Patrol Procedures, Traffic Control, Crime Scene Management, Community and Police Relations, Report Writing, and Police Proficiency Skills. At the conclusion of this program the student will have completed all requirements of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AzPOST) Board standards established to certify police officers in the State of Arizona.

Admission Criteria:

Must meet AzPOST minimum requirements for a law enforcement officer and meet any physical requirements by the Academy Director.

Law Enforcement Investigator Certificate

Program Description:

This certificate program is designed to prepare the law enforcement officer to become a specialist in the investigation of criminal activity and to successfully assist in prosecution. Courses address case management, legal aspects of interviewing, search and seizure, and courtroom presentations. Students will demonstrate skills related to these areas in a crime scene scenario.

An introduction to crime and society's responses to it. Examines the nature and causes of crime, the criminal law, constitutional safeguards, and the organization and operation of the criminal justice system including the police, courts, jails, prisons, probation and parole departments, and community corrections agencies. Explores the complex issues of multiculturalism and law enforcement in the United States, and the possible effects into the next century. Addresses the historical perspectives of the formation of the Anglo-Saxon Northern European culture along with the formation and structure of the "police culture."
