Student Goals: Personal, Career-related

These open entry/open exit and traditional structured courses develop skills in using IBM and/or Macintosh microcomputers and their related software. Students take these courses:

  • For Personal Development of microcomputer skills. Beginning courses are available, such as BPC101 (introductory), 110 (computer operations), 111 (keyboarding), 114 (spreadsheets), 117 (databases), and 128 (desktop publishing). Students may wish to continue in more advanced courses.
  • To Prepare for or Enhance Employment. Both an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree program and a Certificate of Completion program are available. With proper choices, a student who completes the Certificate may apply all those courses toward the Associate Degree program. For either program, students should consult with a department advisor to plan their academic schedules.

Note: Required courses may not be available every semester, students, degree seeking or transfer, should consult with a department advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete degree requirements in an expedient manner.

Microcomputer Business Applications
Associate in Applied Science (AAS) / 66-71 credits

Program Description: The program for the AAS degree in Microcomputer Business Applications consists of 64 credits in courses which can be completed within 2 years. The program includes courses in the following microcomputer areas: general usage and application, operating systems, word processing, database, and spreadsheets. Other skills which are integrated with the microcomputer training are Accounting, English, Math (including statistics), and business systems analysis and design. As many of the courses as possible are offered in the open entry/open exit format, to enable students to enter and complete the program in a timely and flexible manner.

Microcomputer Applications Certificate / 27-31 credits

Program Description: The program for the CCL in Microcomputer Applications consists of 27-31 credits, which can be completed in 2 semesters. The program includes courses in the following microcomputer areas: general usage and applications, operating systems, word processing, database, and spreadsheets. Other business skills, which are integrated with the microcomputer training, are accounting, business calculations and English. As many of the courses as possible are offered in the open entry/open exit format to enable students to enter and complete the program in a timely and flexible manner. Upon completion, students should be able to operate a microcomputer and use a variety of software in a professional manner.

Required Courses: 20-23 credits

Students must earn a grade of "C" or better for each course listed in the Required Courses category. Students must obtain a satisfactory score on math placement test to enroll in MAT120, MAT121, or MAT122.

Introductory course in fundamentals of computers, including hardware components, operating system characteristics, and basic software applications. Prerequisites: None.

Introduction to the use of personal computers in the business environment. Computer hardware components, operating system functions and concepts. Running application software. Prerequisites: None.

Business-Personal Computers II / .5 credit .50 period

Use the personal computer to create, store and retrieve information. Procedures for running and using business application software to produce documents and spreadsheets. Prerequisites: BPC100AA or permission of instructor.

Introduction to Handheld Devices / 1 credit 1 period

Using, configuring, and personalizing common digital handheld devices, such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and phones. Prerequisites: None.

Introduction to business and personal computer operations and usage. Software applications for analyzing and solving business problems including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation graphics. Prerequisites: None.

Mastery of essential microcomputer keyboarding skills. Emphasis on touch typing of alphabetic and numeric keys and symbols. Prerequisites: None.

Micro-Alphabetic Indexing / 1 credit 1.7 periods

Mastery of essential microcomputer filing skills. Emphasis on indexing and alphabetizing individual and business names; subject, geographic, and numeric methods; and cross-referencing. Prerequisites: None.

Introduction to Desktop Publishing / 1 credit 2 periods

Presents basic concepts of commercially prepared software used to do desktop publishing. Incorporates a combination of narrative and pictorial/ graphic creation and presentation, including set up, text entry, graphic generation, text and graphic merging, and other computer-based functions. Prerequisites: None.

Computer Maintenance I: A+ Essentials Prep / 3 credits 4 periods

Technical aspects of the microcomputer, including system setup (hardware and software) and basic troubleshooting. Emphasis on basic troubleshooting, use of tools, hardware components and hardware/software interfacing. Prerequisites: CIS105, or permission of instructor.

Using WordPerfect word processing software features such as math, columns, macros, styles, graphics, sort, outlines, and table of contents. Prerequisites: BPC/OAS135DD or permission of instructor.

Advanced application of software for business and personal computers including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation. Includes integration of applications and Internet. Prerequisites: BPC110, or permission of instructor.

BPC270
Computer Maintenance II: A+ Technician Prep / 3 credits 4 periods

Advanced technical aspects of maintaining and servicing computers. Emphasis placed on installation, periodic maintenance, diagnosis, and/or problem resolution. Helps prepare students for the CompTIA A+ technician examinations including Information Technology (IT) field technician, remote support technician and bench technician. Prerequisites: BPC170 with grade of C or better, or permission of instructor.

BPC298
Special Projects / 1-3 credits

Organized and tailored around the interests and needs of the individual student. Structured to provide an atmosphere of individualized research and study paralleled by professional expertise and guidance. Professional-type facilities and equipment available for student use. Allows the best aspects of independent study and individualized learning to be combined to maximize student development. Prerequisites: Permission of Program Director or instructor.
