Fashion and Sewing courses prepare students for entry level positions in the fashion industry and for personal interest. Knowledge gained in clothing construction techniques, textiles, and merchandising practices prepares students for the retail business world.

Except for TEC110 Basic Sewing Skills, it is assumed that students have some knowlege of how to operate a sewing machine.

IF YOU:

  • are a beginner,
  • know very little about sewing, or
  • have little of no experience with a sewing machine

Basic Sewing Skills
  • have a basic knowledge of sewing,
  • know hot to use a sewing machine
  • are self-taught but want professional guidance, or
  • want to learn how to make your projects look better

Clothing Construction
  • have difficulty making clothes that fit,
  • want to improve pattern fitting techniques,
  • need to be able to fit various body shapes & sizes, or
  • are training to be a dressmaker

Pattern Alteration and Fit
  • have already taken TEC111 and feel that you need more practice before tackling harder techniques, or more advanced classes

Textiles and Clothing (TEC)

TEC110
Basic Sewing Skills / 3 credits 4 periods

Basic clothing construction techniques. Use of commercial patterns and sewing machine in the construction of basic garments. Prerequisites: None. (F,S)

TEC111
Clothing Construction / 3 credits 5 periods

Construction of garments applying basic construction principles and techniques using patterns suitable for the individuals and their capabilities. Prerequisites: None.
Course Note: If student has no previous sewing experience, TEC110 Basic Sewing Skills should be taken prior to and not during this course. May be repeated for a total of 1/ 2 credit hours with permission of instructor.

Alteration of Ready Made Garments / 2 credits 2 periods

Knowledge, skills, and techniques of altering ready made garments for personal or professional use. Experience using a sewing machine assumed. Prerequisites: None. (O)

TEC112AQ
Pattern Alteration and Fit / 2 credits 2 periods

Structural features of patterns and altering patterns to achieve proper fit. Includes figure irregularities, pattern style variations, fashion, and individual figure problems. Experience using a sewing machine assumed. Prerequisites: None. (F,S)
Course Note: May be repeated for a total of six (6) credit hours with instructor permission.

Sewing Clothing Accessories / 1 credit 1 period

Construction of clothing accessories for personal or professional use. Selection of accessories and coordination of accessories with apparel. Experience using a sewing machine assumed. Prerequisites: None. (O)

Note: It is assumed students know how to use a sewing machine and have basic sewing knowledge.

Beginning Quilting / 2 credits 4 periods

Basic construction techniques used in hand and machine quilting. Includes fabric and thread selection, equipment, batting choices, fabric preparation, pattern selection, cutting methods, patchwork assembly techniques by hand and machine, finishing methods, and uses for quilted items. Prerequisites: None (F,S)

Intermediate Clothing Construction / 2 credits 4 periods

Application of intermediate clothing and fitting techniques. Emphasis on improving basic construction skills. Prerequisites: TEC111 or permission of instructor. May be repeated for a total of 8 credit hours with permission of instructor. (F,S)

Creative Sewing Machine Use / 3 credits 3 periods

Use of the sewing machine for other than construction of garments or household items. Emphasis on decorative uses of the sewing machine on items made or purchased by the user. Prerequisites: None. (O)

Sewing with Knits / 3 credits 3 periods

Skills and techniques used in the construction of garments made from knit fabrics. Prerequisites: None. (O)

TEC124
Advanced Clothing Construction / 3 credits 5 periods

Advanced garment construction techniques, pattern alteration and fit and techniques used on specialty fabrics. Prerequisites: TEC111 or permission of instructor.
Course Note: May be repeated for a total of 1/ 2 credit hours with permission of instructor. (F,S)

Sewing for the Home / 3 credits 3 periods

Emphasizes techniques used in producing household textile goods such as slip covers, bedspreads, window treatments, linens, accessories, pillows, etc. Experience using a sewing machine assumed. May be repeated for a total of 9 credit hours with instructor permission. Prerequisites: None. (F,S)

Home Upholstery / 3 credits 4 periods

Includes demonstration and application of knowledge and skills involved in upholstering stools, chairs, headboards, and other home furnishings. Prerequisites: None. (F,S,E)

Sewing with a Serger / 2 credits 2 periods

Operation of a home serger. Use in constructing, finishing, and decorating garments and home decorations. Home serger required. Prerequisites: None. (F,S)

TEC217
Advanced Quilting / 2 credits 4 periods

Advanced techniques used in hand and machine quilting. Includes fabric selection, batting choices, fabric preparation, pattern selection, cutting methods, advanced patchwork and applique assembly techniques by hand and machine, whole-cloth quilting, finishing methods, and uses for quilted items. Prerequisites: TEC117 or permission of instructor. (F,S)

Textiles / 3 credits 3 periods

Study of textile fibers and fabrics, their properties, identification, selection, use, and care. Prerequisites: None. (O)

TEC223
Tailoring / 3 credits 6 periods

Principles of tailoring as applied in the construction of a coat or suit. Alteration of patterns and fitting techniques. Prerequisites: TEC124 or permission of instructor.
Course Note: May be repeated for a total of 1/ 2 credit hours with permission of instructor. (O)

Pattern Design I / 3 credits 5 periods

Creative expression through flat pattern in applying principles of art to clothing design. Various resources for design inspiration. Prerequisites: TEC110 or TEC111 or permission of instructor (O).
Course Note: May be repeated for a total of twelve (12) credits.

TEC229
Advanced Serging / 2 credits 2 periods

Operation of a home serger in advanced application of construction and embellishment for garments and home decoration projects. Home serger required. Prerequisites: TEC129 or permission of instructor. (O)

TEC230
Pattern Design II / 3 credits 5 periods

Practical application in designing clothing/patterns using flat pattern method. Principles of flat pattern and use of sloper reviewed. Includes pattern grading, sizing for figure differences, and creation of an original design. Prerequisites: TEC225 or permission of instructor. (O)
Course Note: May be repeated for a total of twelve (12) credits.

TEC235
Custom Tailored Pants / 2 credits 3 periods

Designed for the home sewing enthusiast or dressmaker who desires a perfectly fitted pant pattern. Pattern adjustments; selecting proper size; fitting procedures for a personalized pant. Fabric draft of the basic pant to be fitted on each student. Prerequisites: TEC111 or equivalent. (O)

TEC298
Special Projects / 1-3 credits

Organized and tailored around the interests and needs of the individual student. Structured to provide an atmosphere of individualized research and study paralleled by professional expertise and guidance. Professional-type facilities and equipment available for student use. Allows the best aspects of independent study and individualized learning to be combined to maximize student development. Prerequisites: Permission of Program Director or instructor.
