The following foreign language course descriptions can be found in alphabetical order in this catalog:
Chinese (CHI), French (FRE), German (GER), Italian (ITA), Japanese (JPN), Latin (LAT), Russian (RUS), Sign Language (SLG), and Spanish (SPA)
Student Goals: Personal, Career-related, General Education
The study of another language not only provides a language skill, but also helps students understand the customs and cultures of other countries. GCC offers the opportunity to study a variety of foreign languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Sign Language, and Spanish. Students take these courses:
- For Personal Interest. The standard courses (101, 102, 201, 202 sequence) provide a thorough grounding in basic grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary in the selected language. The 115-226 sequence is especially recommended for those who wish to focus on conversation mainly for travel needs.
- To Provide Background for other careers. The 115-116 sequence is recommended. For those pursuing a business career, GER217 or SPA217 are recommended as supplements to the GER or SPA 101-202 sequence.
- To Prepare for a Major at a four-year institution. Although most language majors with a bachelor’s degree enter secondary school teaching, others find jobs in travel bureaus, firms involved in foreign trade, and governmental agencies. Those wishing to become college instructors or professional linguists need advanced training far beyond the bachelor’s degree. The 101, 102, 201, 202 sequence in the selected language satisfies university transfer, entrance and graduation requirements. Other courses may be granted foreign-language elective credit. Students intending to pursue a baccalaureate degree in a foreign language should consult with a departmental advisor to plan their program.
