Honors Program

The Honors Program seeks capable students who are highly motivated, intellectually curious, and who enjoy an atmosphere of creative learning.
Honors courses are offered in many disciplines and satisfy the general education requirements for graduation from Glendale. Classes are small, usually limited to 17 students.
Students who complete a minimum of fifteen (15) credits in honors courses (P/Z credits excluded) distributed among four (4) different course prefixes and who maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher will be designated as Honors Program Graduates.
Benefits of the Honors Program include:
- Provisional membership in Phi Theta Kappa, a national honors fraternity
- Personal academic advisement
- Early registration
- Scholarships or fee waivers
- Special recognition for honors achievements
- Cultural and social activities
- Honors forums
- Honors convocation
- Assistance with transfer to our state universities
- Eligibility to participate in regional, national, and international programs and conferences.
There are two ways to enter the Honors Program.
1. Recent graduates of Maricopa County high schools are eligible to apply for the Presidents' Scholarship provided they meet one of the following criteria:
a. Rank in the top 15% of their NCA-accredited Maricopa County high school classes in the 6th, 7th, or 8th semester or
b. Achieve the following placement on the ASSET or COMPASS test in these three areas:English: Placement in Honors ENG101
Reading: Exemption from CRE101
Math: Placement in MAT120 or higherQualified students must enroll during the academic year following high school graduation without having enrolled in any institution other than a Maricopa Community College.
Presidents’ Scholars must meet the following requirements in order to retain their scholarships:
- enroll in and complete a minimum of 12 credits in courses numbered 100 or higher each semester
- enroll in and complete with a grade of "C" or higher at least 3 credits of honors course work each semester
- maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher
- maintain continuous enrollment–summer sessions excluded.
Note: Students who do not meet the requirements for retention face the loss of their scholarships, which cannot be reinstated, and they may be billed for tuition and fees for the semester in which they are enrolled.
2. Continuing and transfer students who have accumulated a minimum of 12 credits in courses numbered 100 and above (P/Z credits excluded) at GCC and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher may apply for the Honors Fee Waiver Program. Students who are accepted will receive partial tuition-fee waivers based on the number of credits for which they are enrolled.

Students accepted into the Honors Fee Waiver Program must meet the following requirements each semester:
- enroll in and complete the number of credits for which they have received a partial fee waiver (P/Z credits excluded)
- enroll in and complete with a grade of "C" or higher at least 3 credits of honors coursework
- maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher
Note: Students who do not complete the number of credits for which they have received a partial fee waiver will be billed for repayment in the amount of the credits not completed.
