Truck Trailer Driving Certificate
CCL 5112 / 16 credits

Program Description:

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) Truck Trailer Driving will provide new entrants into the trucking profession with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate today’s equipment safely and efficiently. Students completing the certificate will be prepared to gain employment in entry-level driving positions.

Coursework includes basic operations; safe operating practices in normal, extreme, and adverse driving conditions; basic vehicle maintenance; and non-vehicle activities including the application of federal and state regulations pertaining to vehicle, cargo, speed, and hours-of-service. Instructions will consist of classroom lecture, lab, range, and street driving. Applicants must complete a program-required prescreening to qualify.

Program Prerequisites:

Must meet pre-qualifying requirements of the industry by providing a social security card, valid Arizona driver's license, five-year motor vehicle report devoid of excessive infractions, and passing Department of Transportation physical exam and drug screen. Any DUI, DWI or reckless/careless driving conviction, or any felony conviction for drug, theft, or sex crimes is considered an excessive infraction.

A grade of "C" or better is required for all courses within the program.

Tractor-Trailer Driving (TTD)

TTD101
Tractor-Trailer Driving I / 3 credits / 3 periods

General program overview. Orientation to trucking profession, including history, governing agencies, and regulations. Professionalism and the role of commercial driver. Introduction to tractor-trailers, including identification and operation of various parts and controls. Introduction to hours-of-service regulations. Discussion of truck stops/fueling stations. Analysis of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Introduction to procedures for coupling, uncoupling, and fifth wheel and trailer tandem slides. Preparation for the Arizona State License and Department of Transportation's certification examinations. Prerequisites: Must meet pre-qualifying requirements of the industry by providing a social security card, valid Arizona driver's license, five-year motor vehicle report devoid of excessive infractions, and passing Department of Transportation physical exam and drug screen. Tractor-Trailer Driving II / 3 credits / 3 periods

Continued study of activities performed by professional drivers, with an emphasis on the safety of the driver, vehicle, cargo, and other road users. Training and certification in first aid and CPR skills. In-depth preparation for hazardous materials, doubles/triples, and tanker endorsements. Introduction to the pre-trip inspection. Discussion of tire chain use and demonstrated installation. Development of knowledge and skills in the areas of cargo documentation and trip planning. Discussion of issues pertaining to life on the road, communications, and personal resources. Includes information gathering and guidance for the job search. Prerequisites: TTD101. (F,S,Su1,Su2,D,E)

TTD103
Tractor-Trailer Driving III / 4 credits / 6 periods

Study and application of practical skills and knowledge necessary for safe, efficient operation. Vehicle handling skills and fuel-efficient operating practices, including backing procedures, coupling and uncoupling, visual search, communications, speed, and space management. Techniques for operation in mountain driving conditions. Includes hazard recognition, emergency maneuvers, and control and recovery. Includes function and operation of all key vehicle systems, diagnosing and reporting of malfunctions to service personnel. Prerequisites: TTD102. (F,S,Su1,Su2,D,E)

TTD104
Tractor-Trailer Driving Practicum / 6 credits / 24 periods

On-the-job practicum providing experience and training to develop advanced competencies in handling a tractor-trailer. Includes accurate reading and evaluation of vehicle systems and controls, advanced proficiency of control maneuvers, gear-shifting procedures, backing and parking, coupling and uncoupling, and driver communication principles. Also includes safe and proper search, speed, and space management; emergency maneuvers; night driving; hazardous weather driving; other hazardous situations, i.e., mountain driving, construction zones, city driving. Provides over-the-road administrative and non-driving experience. Covers non-driving tasks required of the driver. Includes planning trips, conducting vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance and servicing, handling and documenting cargo, record keeping, emergency procedures, customer service, and professionalism.
