CHM107/107LL: Chemistry and Society
A survey of chemistry and its impact on the environment.
Completion of CHM107LL required to meet the Natural Science requirement.

Prerequisites: None.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM107/107LL

CHM130/130LL: Fundamental Chemistry
Course Content designed to meet the needs of students in such areas as agriculture, home economics, nursing, and physical educational among others.

Note: A Hybrid version of CHM130 is offered for self-motivated students with strong math and problem-solving skills. It is designed for students who are unable to attend classes more than one day per week but have time to learn the topics covered and complete work independently outside of class. The CHM130 Hybrid class meets one day per week with extensive Web-based assignments due each week.

Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in CHM090, or MAT091, or MAT092 or MAT102 or satisfactory score on placement exam.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM130/130LL

CHM138/138LL: Chemistry for Allied Health
Elements of fundamental and organic chemistry. Includes the general chemical behavior of inorganic matter and the structure of organic and biochemical systems. Course designed for specific allied health programs at MCCCD. May not be applicable to other allied health programs or transferable.

Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in CHM090, or MAT091, or MAT092, or MAT102, or satisfactory score on math placement exam.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM138/138LL

CHM150: General Chemistry I (Extended Version)
A detailed study of the principles of chemistry. Designed for science majors and students in pre-professional curricula. Completion of CHM151LL required to meet the Natural Science requirement.

Note: CHM150 covers the same material as CHM151 and (like CHM151) meets the pre-requisite requirement for CHM152/152LL and CHM154/154LL when taken with CHM151LL lab. The only difference between CHM150 and CHM151 is the extra contact time. While CHM151 is a 3-credit course, CHM150 is a 4-credit course with additional contact time allowing more cooperative/group learning and problem solving exercises during class time.

Because of CHM151's relatively fast pace, this course was designed to meet the needs of students who completed CHM130 or high school chemistry more than 1 year before taking General Chemistry I or students who require additional in-class practice problems to master the concepts and calculations covered.

Prerequisites: (CHM130 and CHM130LL), or (one year of high school chemistry with a grade of "C" or better taken within the last five years), and completion of intermediate algebra or equivalent. Completion of the pre-requisites within the last two years is recommended.

Course Note: Students may receive credit for only one of the following: CHM150 or CHM151.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM150

CHM151/151LL: General Chemistry I
A detailed study of the principles of chemistry. Designed for science majors and students in pre-professional curricula. Completion of CHM151LL required to meet the Natural Science requirement.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM151/151LL

Note: Because of CHM151's relatively fast pace, students who completed CHM130 or high school chemistry more than 1 year before taking General Chemistry and students who earned a "C" in CHM130 or high school chemistry should consider taking CHM150, the extended version of General Chemistry I.

CHM152/152LL: General Chemistry II
A study of the chemical properties of the major groups of elements, equilibrium theory, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and other selected topics. Prepares students for all sophomore chemistry courses. Completion of CHM152LL required to meet the Natural Science requirement.

Prerequisites: CHM150/CHM151LL or CHM151/CHM151LL. Completion of the pre-requisites within the last two years is recommended.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM152/152LL

CHM154/154LL: General Chemistry II with Qualitative Analysis
A study of the chemical properties of the major groups of elements, equilibrium theory, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and other selected topics. Includes qualitative analysis. Prepares students for all sophomore chemistry courses. Completion of CHM154LL required to meet the Natural Science requirement.

Prerequisites: CHM150/CHM151LL or CHM151/CHM151LL. Completion of the pre-requisites within the last two years is recommended.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM154/154LL

CHM230/230LL: Fundamental Organic Chemistry
Course Content designed to meet the needs of students in such areas as agriculture, home economics, nursing, pre-physician assistant, and physical education among others.

Prerequisites: (CHM130 and CHM130LL) or (CHM150 and CHM151LL) or (CHM151 and CHM151LL). Completion of the pre-requisites within the last two years is recommended.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM230/230LL

CHM235/235LL: General Organic Chemistry I
Rigorous introduction to chemistry of carbon-containing compounds. Reaction mechanisms and recent methods of synthesis emphasized.

Prerequisites: (CHM152 and CHM152LL) or (CHM154 and CHM154LL). Completion of the pre-requisites within the last two years is recommended.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM235/235LL

CHM236/236LL: General Organic Chemistry II
Study of chemistry of carbon-containing compounds continued. Structural determination and additional reaction mechanisms and modern methods of synthesis emphasized.

Prerequisites: CHM235 and CHM235LL. Completion of the pre-requisites within the last two years is recommended.

MCCCD Course Competencies for CHM236/236LL

CHM260: Fundamental Biochemistry
Designed for students in agriculture, dental hygiene, home economics, nursing, and physical therapy. Covers structures, properties, and functions of proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids; the utilization and synthesis of these materials by living systems and the relationship of the processes to energy production and utilization.
