You can backup your files to a ZIP disk, floppy disks, or to your storage space on Glory. Do NOT copy any applications to the server. They will fill up all your storage space, and they will generally not work when copied back to your hard drive after re-imaging. Here are instructions.
Back up your DATA files. This might be a great time to
“houseclean” and eliminate old data files you will never use again.
Office97 by default stores its data files to the C:\My Documents
folder. Unless you store them elsewhere, they are likely there.
Make sure you copy all the sub-folders in “My Documents” as well.
You will probably want to make a thorough check of your hard drive to see
if any stray documents got stored elsewhere. You can use the Find
command to search for files with the following extensions:
| Application | File Extension | Application | File Extension |
| Word documents | .doc | Web pages | .htm or .html |
| Excel spreadsheets | .xls or .xla | Wallpaper | .bmp |
| Powerpoint | .ppt or .pps | Personal graphics | .gif, .jpeg, .pcx., .tiff |
| Access databases | .mdb or .md* | Signature file | .txt |
If you have any personalized wallpaper files that you want to keep, back those up as well. They are normally located in the C:\Windows directory and have an extension of .bmp.
Back up your Netscape preferences and files. If you are using Netscape 4.0 or higher, you will have a “profile” folder on your hard drive. The typical profile name is probably “user” or your name (like pmaxson). The way to find this is to look at C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\. The next level of folder will be your profile folder. Inside this folder resides your mail, newsgroups, address books, archives and cache. You may have only the “user” folder or you may have others. Delete all the files in the Cache folder, and then copy all the folders below C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\ This will help retain all your mail and newsgroup settings as well as any mail you have saved on your local drive.
Locate your Bookmark.htm file. It is likely in the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\User folder, or located in C:\My Documents folder. If you cannot find it, do a Find Files/Folders from the Start button.
If you are using student email, backup any folders under Local Mail. If all of your folders are under student.gc.maricopa.edu (including your Drafts, Sent Mail, and Templates), they are stored on the server. You can double-check the locations of these files by going to Edit | Preferences | Copies & Folders.
If you use Outlook, you will want to back up those files. Typically they are located in C:\Windows and are called “Outlook.prf” and “Outlook.pst”.
As a final check, look at Documents on the Start Menu. This list contains your most recently opened documents. Make sure they have been backed up!
