Clinozoisite Pictures

BACK TO A,B,C

CHEMISTRY  - Ca2Al3 (SiO4) (Si2O7) O (OH)

CRYSTALLOGRAPHY  - Monoclinic

CRYSTAL GROWTH AND HABITS  - Crystals of Clinozoisite are typically prismatic and elongate with striations parallel to their long axis [010].  It can also be fibrous to granular.

COLOR AND OTHER OPTICAL PROPERTIES  - Pale yellow to greenish but also colorless, pink, reddish and gray.  It is transparent to translucent.

HARDNESS  - 6.5

SPECIFIC GRAVITY  - 3.21 - 3.38

LUSTER  - Vitreous

STREAK  - White

BREAKABILITY  - Clinozoisite has nearly perfect cleavage along {001} with an uneven fracture.  It is brittle.

OCCURRENCE   - Clinozoisite is found in low to medium grade regional metamorphic terrains.  It is also produced as a product of contact metamorphism of calcium rich sediments and it is an alteration product of plagioclase feldspars.

ASSOCIATED MINERALS - Most commonly Clinozoisite is found with Quartz, Plagioclase and Amphiboles.

NAME  - It is a name derived from its crystallography (clino for monoclinic) and its chemical relation to Zoisite.
