CRYSTALLOGRAPHY - Monoclinic

CRYSTAL GROWTH AND HABITS - Crystals of Crocoite are most commonly long prismatic.  Faces are typically very smooth.  Crystals are also commonly hollow.  It can also be massive to granular.

COLOR AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES - Color varies from red to deep orange-red, orange and yellow;  Transparent to translucent.

HARDNESS - 2.5 - 3

SPECIFIC GRAVITY - 5.9 - 6.0

LUSTER - Vitreous to adamantine

STREAK - Orange to yellow

BREAKABILITY - Distinct cleavage along {110} with sub conchoidal to uneven fracture.  Sectile.

OCCURRENCE - A secondary mineral found in altered, oxidized area of lead and chromium minerals.

ASSOCIATED MINERALS - Pyromorphite, Cerussite, Wulfenite, Vanadinite, Descloizite.

MINERAL NAME - From the Greek for saffron referring to its yellowish orange color.
