CHEMISTRY - CaB2(SiO4)2

CRYSTALLOGRAPHY - Orthorhombic

CRYSTAL GROWTH AND HABITS - Danburite forms distinct prismatic crystals that have a square or rhomboidal cross section.  It can also be massive.

COLOR AND OTHER OPTICAL PROPERTIES - Commonly clear to white but also yellowish to brown or greenish.

HARDNESS -        7 - 7.5

SPECIFIC GRAVITY -  2.9 - 3.00

LUSTER - Vitreous to greasy

STREAK - White

BREAKABILITY - Poor cleavage in one direction; uneven to sub conchoidal fracture;  brittle.  

OCCURRENCE -  Danburite occurs in metamorphosed carbonate rocks and in granites associated with hydrothermal activity.  It is also found in evaporites.

MINERAL NAME -  Named after the locality where it was found:  Danbury, Connecticut.
