CRYSTALLOGRAPHY - Orthorhombic

CRYSTAL GROWTH AND HABITS - Crystals are typically pyramidal, prismatic or tabular;  commonly stalactitic, drusy, botryoidal, fibrous to massive.

COLOR AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES - Normally brownish to black with a reddish hue;  transparent to translucent.

HARDNESS - 3 - 3.5

SPECIFIC GRAVITY - 6.2

LUSTER - Greasy to vitreous

STREAK - Orange to reddish brown

BREAKABILITY - Uneven fracture;  Brittle

OCCURRENCE - Descloizite is found in the oxidized zone of vanadium bearing mineral veins.

ASSOCIATED MINERALS - Vanadinite, Mottramite, Pyromorphite, Mimetite, Wulfenite

MINERAL NAME - Named in honor of the French mineralogist Des Clozeaux who first describe the mineral.
