SLATE
Slates come in a variety of colors. These three specimens show reddish and
greenish varieties. The coloration is related to its iron contents.
Slate represents the earliest stages of metamorphism. Here the clay
particles are simply compressed producing a denser rocks than shale. Note
also that in these samples of slate (slate is also the background) the naturally
flat break of the surfaces. This is called slatey cleavage and imparts an
economic value to the slate. The ease and consistency of the break allows
it to be used as tiles, roofing and even pool tables.
Slate Uses:
Natural slate comes in a variety of colors dependent upon iron content and
degree of oxidation of the iron. This gazebo roof top in New Yor City's
