CHEMISTRY Ca2Al3 (SiO4) (Si2O7) O (OH)

It is dimorphous with Clinozoisite

CRYSTALLOGRAPHY  - Orthorhombic

CRYSTAL GROWTH AND HABITS - Crystals are typically long prismatic with striations parallel to their long axis [010].

COLOR AND OTHER OPTICAL PROPERTIES  - Normally gray to greenish gray or greenish brown.  It can also be pink, purple, blue (Tanzanite) or colorless. 

HARDNESS  -  6 - 7        

SPECIFIC GRAVITY   - 3.15 - 3.36      

LUSTER  - Vitreous to slightly pearly on cleavage faces.

STREAK  - White

BREAKABILITY  -  Zoisite has nearly perfect cleavage along {010} and imperfect along {100}.  It has an uneven fracture and is brittle.
