The Traveler
Comments & Commentary

The Traveler, GCC's student art/literary magazine, has been in the press quite a bit lately. Articles appeared in the Arizona Republic and the Chronicle of Higher Education during May, 2001, following concerns voiced by Arizona legislators about the appropriateness of the art in the magazine. The Phoenix New Times article Banned in Glendale: Community college literary magazine sparks right-wing censorship battle by John W. Allman (6/14/2001) is available online.

The Traveler
Rates High Again
from President's Newsletter, Dr. Phillip Randolph

GCC's literary and arts magazine, The Traveler, consistently places very high among its counterparts, year after year.  On Sept. 30, I learned that the publication received another Gold Medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, earning 964 of 1,000 possible points for organization, content and design.  This rating is one of the highest The Traveler has received in its 35-year history.  Congratulations to literary faculty advisors Kathleen "Casey" Furlong, Johnnie Clemens May and Joy Wingersky; to visual arts faculty advisors Pam Hall and Dean Terasaki; and to English student editors Mandy O'Dell and Nicole Robbins.

I stumbled onto the Traveller site that you maintain by accident and just
wanted to say that I am very impressed by the content.
When so often we are assaulted by rubbish this site was a welcome and
rewarding treat.

Based on the rather sensationalist article in this week's Chronicle of Higher Education, I visited your website and spent some time looking at several issues of Traveler.  I find the publication to be very well done and am proud that it is the work of community college students. Jim Kearns' work is amazing. He is a promising artist and an excellent talent. Thanks for offering the magazines on the website.

Thanks to the Chronicle of Higher Education I am now aware of the literary publication The Traveler. Please continue to do all you can to thwart the knee-jerk actions of people such as State Senator Bundgaard.
All the best,

I'm a little late getting a good look at the web version of The Traveler. I'm very impressed that we have such a thing on-line. It is something we should brag about, rather than hide for fear of the book burning mentalities out there... Anyway, great job, as usual.
