Frequently Asked Questions about GCC's Pay for Print:

Following are questions and answers to help guide students through the new Pay-for-Print process:

  • Why is GCC charging for printing?

Pay-for-Print supports students and the College by helping students make better-informed decisions about what they print. Among the goals is to reduce excess printing on campus, thus saving on costs for paper, ink and toner. GCC spent more than $25,000 in paper and toner alone for printing in HT1, HT2 and the LMC open labs during the Fall 2008 semester. This does not include the cost of new printers or maintenance and repair on existing machines. Additionally, the program advances the College’s “green” efforts through environmental responsibility.
  • Why can't printing charges come out of fees I already pay?

All students do not use campus-printing resources uniformly. Some do little or no printing; others print significantly higher totals. Charging directly for printing will allow each student to control what he or she spends on printing. Reducing these costs can allow departments to refocus funds toward delivery of new and improved services. Student are assessed course fees, but those funds are used by instructors for class purposes and not applied for technology uses.
  • How much will I be charged?
The fee will be 10 cents per printed side for black/white pages and $1 per printed side for color pages. Pages printed back-to-back are considered two printed pages.
  • How do I set up and fund my printing account?
    • Obtain your GCC student ID card. If you do not have one, go to the Enrollment Center.
    • Use your eGCC username and password.
    • Insert your ID card into a deposit machine to activate/access your account. Deposit machines are located in HT1 and the Library Media Center at GCC Main. At GCC North, a deposit machine is located in the Computer Commons area. Other locations will be announced in the near future.
    • Deposit cash up to your account maximum of $10 into the deposit machine. Add only the amount you think you will need. Change machines are located in the Library Media Center.
    • NOTE: Directions are also posted on the deposit machines for student convenience.
  • How do I print pages?
    • When you are ready to print, send your document to the print queue.
    • Go to a Print Release station and use your eGCC credentials to login. After logging in, select the print jobs you want to release.
  • Can I release my print job from anywhere on campus?
Yes. You can send to the print queue and print from any Print Release station.
  • When am I charged for my print job?
You are not charged until you release your print job at the Print Release station.
  • How long does my print job remain in the queue before being deleted?
Your print job will be deleted after six hours in the queue.
  • What happens if I pay, the printer jams and I don't get my print job?
See a staff member at the Service Desk for assistance and they will print your job for you.
  • What if I left my ID card at home?
    • You can continue to print up to the amount of money already in your account.
    • NOTE: Place your ID card into your wallet or purse so you don't forget it. You will need your card to add money to your account.
  • What happens if my ID card is lost or stolen?
Go to the Enrollment Center to get a replacement card. The money in your account will not be lost.
  • How can I reduce my cost or amount of printing?
    • Send information or documents via email to yourself, your professors or colleagues.
    • Download information or save it to your network drive, a USB drive or on your Google Documents.
    • Write down information the old fashioned way, especially if you only need brief notes or the call number for a book.
    • Preview documents and print only the pages you need rather than an entire document.
    • Use the Copy Center for high-volume print jobs
  • What happens if I am no longer attending GCC and I still have money in my printing account?
Refunds are given when you leave the institution, but please keep only the amount you believe you will need at any time in your account.
  • What if I have additional questions?
See a staff member in HT1 for assistance.
