A Description of the Innovation
How the Collaborative Calendar is Used by the Public and Campus Community
The GCC Calendar of Events is linked to the GCC home page and many other sites. The default category is Students / Academic events. Users may select four other categories – Arts, Athletics, Community, and Employees – as well as a different range of dates, using the on-screen controls. Multiple dates appear like a traditional wall calendar, in a seven-column grid. In this grid format, only a short simple title for each event is provided, along with the times and location, if provided. To view more detail about a specific event, the user may click on its title to bring up a larger display for it. At minimum, contact information is provided for each event, while the detailed view may also include paragraphs of description and links to other web sites. Clicking on a single date numeral in the calendar grid or using the controls at the top of the page to specify a single date will also bring up detailed versions of multiple events, listed together on the page.
The dynamic properties of the program allow the web page to "maintain itself." That is, current dates always appear by default, and dates more than a month in the past rotate out of reach. (The calendar authors never have to manage the multiple page layouts in which their information may appear – only the information itself.)
Web site and e-mail authors can also construct links to custom categories, date ranges, and events within the calendar web site. For example, the TED home page (http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/ted) includes a link labeled "This Month’s Training." It opens the current month on the shared calendar, in the Employees category only. The link labeled "this week’s activities" on the English home page (http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/english) pulls up the current week, in all categories. These links are dynamic: the TED and English web site authors never have to update them as the current dates change. An example of such a link is http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/calendar/today – to display the detailed version of everything on the Collaborative Calendar today, in all categories.
