WebScribe
A Nomination for the Innovation of the Year Program, 2002

A Description of the Innovation

Review of Relevance to Innovation of the Year Criteria

WebScribe adds quality ("Value Education") to the institution by increasing and improving communication, participation, and interactivity on its Web. It has also provided students with a means of submitting assignments electronically, sharing their talents and experience with classmates, and garnering public recognition for their work.

WebScribe adds efficiency ("Value Responsibility") by saving employees time, emphasizing immediacy in the web publishing process, and allowing more personal and specific accountability for the college's web-based information.

WebScribe adds effectiveness ("Value Responsibility") by saving the cost of either hiring outsiders to maintain complex web sites, or having employees add the time to maintain such sites (in the conventional way) to their schedules. There is an additional savings in printing costs when an electronic magazine replaces a formerly paper-based publication such as Gaucho Gazette. Another element of the project's effectiveness is its simple HTML delivery for the end user, a technical aspect that respects the Maricopa Mission's emphasis on affordable and accessible learning environments.

WebScribe furthers learning ("Value Students") by showcasing student work, promoting the students' use of campus computing resources, and by increasing the availability of web-based content for employees and students in general.

WebScribe exemplifies creativity ("Value Excellence") because it consists of original scripts, custom web design, and unique functionality created by GCC personnel.

WebScribe reflects timeliness ("Value Excellence") because it has proven its usefulness and practicality in the last year and because its primary benefit to Internet users is the flow of frequently updated information of current interest to students, employees and the community. This aspect of timeliness especially respects the Maricopa Vision of continuous quality improvement which is difficult to realize with web sites of a more static nature, that are created to exist out of the technical or practical reach of those responsible for updates and improvements.

WebScribe is designed for collaboration ("Value Excellence"), allowing for the cooperation of multiple authors -- whether an employee team, or students in a course -- to rapidly make a WebScribe-generated web site into an information-rich resource.

WebScribe allows for replication ("Value Excellence"), with versions of the program already having been successfully "cloned" in the development process. Although technicians at other locations may choose their own version of password authentication (for example, to allow non-MEMO account holders such as students to participate), the rest of the program will work on any web server on which ColdFusion is or can be installed. As this infrastructure is very common, several Maricopa locations are already WebScribe-ready, including the District Office and Mesa Community College.

Finally, WebScribe showcases the deeply valued diversity ("Value Diversity) of our students, employees, and interests, by broadening the participation of the campus community in the publication of content-rich web sites reflecting the input of students, staff, and faculty for widely varying purposes. This diversity of purpose ranges from the free exchange of views ("Value Freedom," as in the opinion pieces in the student newspaper) to accountability for professional actions ("Value Responsibility," as in reporting the minutes of meetings for campus committees).
