Glendale Community College (GCC) is the second-largest unit of the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD). The District serves more than 2.4 million residents in the 9,226 square miles of Maricopa County, Arizona. More than 180,000 students in Maricopa County are enrolled in one of MCCD's nine Colleges and two education/skill centers. Maricopa currently ranks as the largest multi-campus community college system in the United States and is also the largest single provider of higher education in Arizona. Maricopa Community Colleges are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and are approved by the Arizona State Board of Directors for Community Colleges.
The GCC Campus Glendale Community College is located at Olive and 59th Avenue in Glendale, Arizona. The 149- acre campus is distinguished by its southwestern architecture and beautiful palm-lined walkways. The mild climate enables students to
enjoy informal outdoor social and study areas and large open spaces along the malls. Over 35 buildings on campus feature well equipped laboratories, state-of-the-art lecture halls, informal student areas, and conference facilities. Special Campus FacilitiesThis on-campus exercise facility serves approximately 1,500 students, employees, and community members each semester. It features the Universal aerobic super circuit, treadmills, stair masters, rowing machines, stationary bicycles, and various body-building machines. Participants are provided with personal assessments and a computerized training program and may attend as frequently as desired. Trained,
certified instructors are available to assist students during all hours of operation. A swimming pool is also available. High Tech Center I is a large, multi-discipline computer and technology facility. A recessed open lab area, commonly called the "pit," is located in the center of the building. It holds 336 microcomputers and terminals, most of which are networked. Surrounding the pit are administrative offices, a conference room, the college telephone switchboard, an academic and administrative
computer center, a teleconference room, a TV studio, a foreign language laboratory, a computer-aided drafting/design lab, and several other computer laboratories. High Tech II is a semi-circular multi-discipline computer and technology facility. The building has 10 classrooms and 10 faculty offices. An open lab area is capable of holding 144 microcomputers and terminals. In the building's center, an electronically
controlled classroom contains 25 microcomputers and a 15-foot rear projection screen. The Center for Innovation, reference library, and offices are also in the center area. The on-line catalog in the Library Media Center gives access to Maricopa
Community College libraries with connections to Arizona State University and other libraries. The LMC houses approximately 77,000 volumes, subscribes to more than 430 periodicals, has CD-ROM databases, and about 3,200 titles in non-print media (videos, cassettes, slides, etc.). The LMC is open Monday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, until 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The Literacy Center provides free and flexible educational services for adults in the subjects of English, reading, mathematics, spelling, vocabulary, speaking, and writing. It uses computer- assisted instruction (CAI), one-on-one tutoring (reading), and traditional education.
